JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -
Amanda Carroll produced her third consecutive double-double, but the FGCU volleyball team lost a four-set road tilt at Jacksonville 29-27, 26-24, 18-25, 25-23 on the road Saturday.
The outcome gave FGCU its second straight loss for the first time since Sept. 1-2. The Eagles are now two games in the loss column behind Jacksonville (15-8, 9-1 ASUN) and Kennesaw State (8-1 ASUN) in the ASUN standings with four left to play.
"We have a lot of work to do heading into the final two weeks of the conference season," FGCU head coach
Matt Botsford said. "In particular, our execution towards the end of sets this weekend was really poor. I'm disappointed by our play and our response to being put in some tight situations. I have to do a better job preparing them for those moments and they have to find a mindset where they embrace those moments.
"We had some really good individual performances tonight, but as we saw against North Florida, that doesn't necessarily translate to wins. Moving forward, we have to focus our energy on finding ways to play more stable 'system' volleyball."
Carroll (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia HS) finished with 21 kills, 16 digs, three assists and one ace. In addition to it being her third straight double-double, the junior picked up her fourth match with at least 20 kills this year, and she's now averaging 17 kills and 16 digs over the past three matches.
Assisting Carroll offensively was
Daniele Serrano,
Snowy Burnam and
Cortney VanLiew.
Serrano (Sanford, Fla./Seminole HS) finished second on the team with 14 kills, which ties her career-high set on Oct. 17 against Bethune-Cookman. It was also the third time over the past four matches in which she's had double digit kills.
Burnam (Palm City, Fla./Jensen Beach HS) tallied 11 kills, which gives her three straight matches with double digits. She also contributed six digs and one block assist, and she averaged 11 kills, 8.5 digs and three block assists against North Florida and Jacksonville this weekend.
VanLiew (Seymour, Ind./Columbus East HS) finished with eight kills and 11 digs. It was her second straight and eighth match overall this year with double digits in digs, and she reached eight kills in a match for the 19th time this year.
Maggie Rick (Alpharetta, Ga./Blessed Trinity Catholic HS) contributed 49 assists in the match, which was just two shy of matching her season-high. The junior also added seven digs, five kills and one block assist. It was her second straight match with at least 40 assists, seven digs and five kills. She now has an even 3,400 career assists.
Defensively,
Karissa Rhoades (Valrico, Fla./Bloomingdale Senior HS) had a team-high 18 digs along with three assists and a team-high two aces. It was her 10th straight match with at least 10 digs, and she tied her total for fifth most in a match this season. Furthermore, she is averaging nearly twice as many digs per set (4.29) than she did last season (2.20).
Courtney Stephens (Winter Park, Fla./Winter Park HS) also continued her stellar defensive play. The senior, who reached 1,000 career digs on Friday with a season-high 18, followed that up with 11 more on Saturday. She now has five matches this year in double digits.
Burnam and Serrano picked up the lone two solo blocks for FGCU, who only had four block assists as a team. The Eagles, who were hurt by nine service errors, did produce their second highest totals in kills (63), assists (59) and digs (72) in a match this year.
FGCU had a chance to win each set it lost on Saturday. In the opener, FGCU held a 26-25 advantage, but Jacksonville followed with four kills to overcome a Serrano kill that tied things at 27. The second set saw the Eagles produce a pair of four-point leads. Then, they led 23-21 and 24-23, but a pair of FGCU attack errors helped Jacksonville score the final three points. The final set saw 11 ties with the final one coming at 22 apiece. Out of a timeout, Jacksonville got a kill and an ace for two match points. A kill from Carroll kept the visitors alive, but the Dolphins finished things off with a kill for their third two-point set victory of the match.
FGCU is now 15-11 all-time against Jacksonville. The two teams have split a pair of regular season matches this year, and Saturday's loss snapped a four-match winning streak against the Dolphins, who are now 6-5 against the Eagles at home. FGCU is 12-7 in ASUN regular season matchups, though.
