MIAMI, Fla. -
Amanda Carroll and
Cortney VanLiew each produced double-doubles as the FGCU volleyball team picked up a straight set win (25-21, 25-15, 25-17) over Florida International University on the road Tuesday.
The match, which was rescheduled from Sept. 19 due to Hurricane Irma, was the fourth straight win for FGCU (13-6). The Eagles will be back in action at home on Friday against Jacksonville at 7 p.m. before hosting North Florida at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
"I thought we played amazing defensively," FGCU head coach
Matt Botsford said. "We've been on them a lot recently about making that jump both at the net and the floor defense. But I thought tonight those things really played hand in hand with one another. I'm really pleased with the direction on that side of the ball. It's going to require some more consistency, but if this is any indication, then I think we're in good shape."
VanLiew (Seymour, Ind./Columbus East HS) and
Carroll (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia HS) each had a match-high 11 kills, while VanLiew had a team-high 12 digs. Carroll chipped in 11 digs, and the duo of
Karissa Rhoades (Valrico, Fla./Bloomingdale Senior HS) and
Courtney Stephens added 11 apiece.
Stephens (Winter Park, Fla./Winter Park HS) had three of her digs in the opening set, which moved her into the top five in program history in digs. The senior now has 956, which vaults her past Gigi Meyer (947, 2011-14). On top of that, she finished one shy of her season-high, which was set on Oct. 6 against USC Upstate. It was her third double-digit dig match this year.
Rhoades has now recorded double digit digs in four straight and 17 of 19 matches this year. Carroll produced her third straight double-double, which was also her fourth over the past five matches and ninth of the season. VanLiew's double-double was her fourth of the season.
Maggie Rick (Alpharetta, Ga./Blessed Trinity Catholic HS) had a match-high 34 assists. She has recorded at least 30 on 17 occasions this year.
Snowy Burnam and
Daniele Serrano also contributed with eight and six kills, respectively.
Serrano (Sanford, Fla./Seminole HS) and VanLiew each had a team-high three block assists, while
Kaitlan Krivdo (Hope Mills, N.C./Grays Creek HS) chipped in two. Her and
Burnam (Palm City, Fla./Jensen Beach, Fla.) also had the team's lone two solo blocks.
The win over FIU (2-10) is the second of the season for FGCU, who also swept the Panthers on Aug. 25 in the Hilton Garden Inn Invitational. Additionally, FGCU is now 8-5 all-time in the series, which includes eight straight wins.
