@FGCU_WGolf Concludes Weekend with Third Place Finish at Redbird Invitational

Box score (pdf)

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women's golf team concluded play at the 2016 Redbird Invitational with a 3rd place finish. The Eagles produced a team round of 303 on Monday, Sept. 5 at the Weibring Gold Club and finished play with a total score of 902 (+38).

In the final round, the Eagles maintained their third place position from Sunday, carding 10 strokes behind second-place finisher Northern Illinois and 12 behind Boston College who earned the team championship at 879 (306-291-293). Butler and host Illinois State rounded out the top five with scores of 903 and 911 respectively. FGCU's team score included rounds of 299, 300 and 303.

"Today was another up and down day," said head coach Sarah Trew. "We had some not-so-great holes but finished well and showed some flashes of brilliance.  Our short game and wedges are pretty rusty and we made some mental mistakes, but I feel that those things can be fixed with some focused practice. We had 36 birdies and three eagles, so there's no doubt this team can go low. We need to eliminate some of the high numbers, and we will get some wins."

Four out of five Eagles turned in top-20 finishes following the final day of the competition. As a team, FGCU led the field with 12 birdies in the third round.

Sophomore Madeline Marck-Sherk (Ridgeway, Ontario/Ridgeway Crystal Beach High School) carded the lowest score of the tournament for the Eagles and tied for 12-overall with rounds of 74, 74 and 76 (+8).

Lone senior Megan Blonien (Altus, Okla./Altus High School/Oklahoma State) turned in a plus-9 score of 225 (75, 74, 76) after three rounds of competition and tied for 14th overall.

Junior Madison Easterbrook (Burlington, Ontario/Aldershot High School) and freshman Kate Williamson (Deerfield Beach, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy HS) each carded scores of 228 (+12) to wrap up the weekend, tying for 19th individually. Easterbrook shot 73, 81 and 74 in the tournament, while Williamson turned rounds of 77, 72 and 79.

Freshman Ailsa Clark (Navarre, Fla./Navarre HS) improved on her scores from Sunday with a final round of 77. The rookie finished the weekend with a total score of 238 (+22) after carding rounds of 81 and 80 during the 36 holes.

A year ago, Trew led the team to several records on and off the course. The 2013-14 squad set a new single-season scoring record with a team average of 307.88, while also setting a new benchmark academically. The spring of 2015 saw the Eagles again take third place at the A-Sun Championship, and recording their best team score of the season while 2016 again set a new standard. The 2015-16 squad recorded a new program best with a 305.29 average and took a second-place finish at the conference tournament. In that event, the Eagles carded a team score of 290 to set the program's new record and earned the top finish in program history.
