@FGCU_Baseball Jumps on No. 4 FSU Early, Wins Extra-Inning Thriller

The Eagles Defeated the Noles for the Second Straight Time at Dick Howser Stadium

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Behind a trio of home runs from three and four-hole hitters Jake Noll and Tyler Selesky, the FGCU baseball team (22-25, 7-8 A-Sun) defeated No. 4 FSU (32-15, 14-6 ACC), 11-8, in 10 innings Wednesday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium.

After Noll's (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS) second home run of the game in the top of the eighth inning extended FGCU's lead to 8-4, the Seminoles were able to plate a pair of runs in each of their next two at-bats to force extra innings. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Matt Henderson extended the inning with a double to right center before Taylor Walls hit his second homer of the game over the fence in right field to tie it up, 8-8.

In the first frame of extra innings, Matt Reardon (Palm City, Fla./Martin County HS) drew a one-out walk and advanced all the way to third as Tyler Warmoth's pickoff attempt skipped past first base. Three pitches later, Jake Smith (Windermere, Fla./Windermere Prep), who went 3-for-5 on the afternoon and extended his hit streak to six games, hit a sac fly to score Reardon and give FGCU its early lead back. With two outs, Noll hit a single through the left side of the infield before Selesky (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) deposited a 1-0 changeup over right-field fence.

The win marked the Eagles second straight against the Seminoles at their home ballpark after also claiming a 5-0 win against then-No. 7 FSU a season ago. Additionally, with FSU appearing at No. 4 in Collegiate Baseball's latest poll, the Noles were the highest-ranked opponent FGCU has defeated since claiming a 5-1 win against then-No 2 FSU in 2012.

"Our guys just kept grinding and were able to find a way to get things done," said FGCU head coach Dave Tollett. "We had a plan going in of never letting them see the same guy twice and were able to hold them to seven hits. We've swung the bats well the last few games, and it was big to be able to get this win today."

FGCU didn't waste any time in getting on the scoreboard as 10 Eagles stepped to the plate in the top of the first and the Green and Blue jumped out to a 5-0 lead. With the bases loaded and one out, three runs crossed on a fielder's choice, walk and error before Gage Morey (West Palm Beach, Fla./PB Central HS) hit a two-out, two-run single to left field.

In the next at-bat, Noll added to the early advantage as he hammered a 1-2 pitch to left field that wound up in the parking lot beyond the visitor's bullpen and extended the lead to 6-0. It was Noll's ninth home run of the season and second in as many games.

After retiring the first eight batters of the game, FGCU starter Kenton Hering (Melbourne, Fla./Eastern Florida State College) hit Henderson with a two-strike pitch before Walls made him pay as he hit the next pitch over the right field fence to cut the FGCU lead to 6-2.

FGCU freshman relievers Ryan Lang (Merritt Island, Fla./Merritt Island HS) and Cory Weiand (Crystal River, Fla./Seven Rivers Christian) then combined to hold the Noles scoreless in the three middle innings. Lang worked two perfect frames with three strikeouts after reliving Hering to start the fourth, and Weiand retired FSU in order in the sixth thanks to a 6-4-3 double play.

The home-standing Seminoles cut the FGCU advantage to two runs in the bottom of the seventh after their at-bat was extended when Donovan Petrey reached third base on a fielding error. Dylan Busby then stepped to the plate and took advantage of the mistake as he hit a two-run home run off the scoreboard in left field.

Noll hit his aforementioned second home run of the game and 10th of the season to left-center field before FSU came back to force extra innings. The Eagles then used resiliency to plate three in the top of the 10th and claim the win.

Clint Konblauch (5-0, 5.40) earned the win after striking out John Sansone on three pitches to stop the bleeding in the bottom of the ninth and closed the door by tossing a perfect frame in the bottom of the 10th. Knoblauch (Wellington, Fla./Wellington HS) has not allowed an earned run and has only given up four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in nine appearances since March 25. Additionally, he has earned three wins and recorded a save during the span.

As a team, FGCU has tallied 44 runs on 52 hits in its last three games. After going 4-for-4 with four runs scored and three RBI in today's win, Noll has gone 12-for-15 with 11 runs, three home runs, six doubles and nine RBI. Additionally, Selesky's 10th-inning home run was his third in as many games and his fifth in the Eagles' last nine. After entering the season with a combined four home runs in their careers, the FGCU duo has combined for 18 long balls this season.
