FORT MYERS, Fla. – For the second time this week,
Zach Spivey stepped to the plate with the game tied and a runner in scoring position and delivered the big hit as his single through the left side of the infield scored
Gage Morey and gave FGCU (18-17, 4-1 A-Sun) a 6-5 walk-off win against NJIT (12-20, 2-5 A-Sun) Saturday afternoon at Swanson Stadium.
With runners on second and third and the infield in,
Spivey (Ormond Beach, Fla./Spruce Creek HS) hit a 1-1 breaking ball past a diving shortstop to score
Morey (West Palm Beach, Fla./PB Central HS) easily from third. Earlier this week, it was a similar situation as the sophomore outfielder also scored Morey in walk-off fashion when FGCU pulled the upset of No. 16 FAU Tuesday night.
With the victory, the Eagles not only claimed their second A-Sun series win of the season, but also secured their 56th conference set since joining the league in 2008. It was FGCU's fifth win in its last six games after going on a five-game slide at the end of March and start of April.
"We would've like to do a better job of playing with the lead, but kudos to Spivey for stepping to the plate in another pressure situation and delivering the game winner." said FGCU head coach
Dave Tollett. "I thought
Garrett Anderson got us off to a great start, but our bullpen wasn't quite able to sure it up as they've done the past few games. Regardless, we got the win and are excited to get back after it tomorrow."
After surrendering a 4-0 lead on a pair of runs in the top of the seventh and eighth innings,
Corey Fehribach (Douglasville, Ga./West Georgia CC) hit a single through the right side of the infield to score
Jake Noll (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS) from second on what was then the go-ahead run.
However, the Highlanders were quick to respond when nine-hole hitter Justin Etts led off the ninth with a single. He was then sacrificed to second base and scored on Evan Pietronico's RBI double into the left-center-field gap before Spivey once again came through with the late-inning theatrics.
The Green and Blue jumped out to an early lead and appeared destined to cruise to a win against the Highlanders with
Anderson (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto County HS) having allowed only two hits through six inning of play.
FGCU got on the scoreboard in the opening frame for the second straight game as
Tyler Selesky (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) scored Spivey on a sacrifice fly to right field, and the Eagles added to their lead in the third when freshman catcher
Matt Roberts (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch HS) hit a leadoff double and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Spivey.
In its next at bat, FGCU made it a 4-0 game when
Colton Bottomley (Parkland, Fla./Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS) ripped his 12th double of the season into the left-center-field gap to score Selesky from first. Two batters later,
Tyler Atwell (Venice, Fla./Tallahassee CC) hit a RBI single past a diving third baseman to score Bottomley before the Highlander's comeback effort began.
NJIT put its first three batters on base in the top of seventh inning and were able to cut into the FGCU lead. Johnny Malatesta drove in Stephan Halibej on a fielder's choice to second base before
Sterling Koerner (Fort Pierce, Fla./John Carroll HS) relieved Anderson with the bases loaded and one out. Then, after striking out Michael Anatasia, Etts hit a grounder to second that took a bad hop on Noll and scored Tom Brady to make it a 4-2 ballgame.
The following inning, NJIT got to within one when Brady singled up the middle to score Pietronico and tied the game after taking advantage of a FGCU error when Selesky and Atwell collided on a pop fly off the bat of Bryan Haberstroh, allowing pinch runner Matt Yuhas to score from third.
FGCU side-armer
Christian Townsend (1-1, 3.29) earned the win in relief, while NJIT reliever Tommy Derer (2-3, 4.73) suffered the loss.
Offensively, FGCU's two through five hitters went 8-for-14 from the plate with four runs scored and four more driven in. Spivey, Noll, Selesy and Bottomley all turned in multiple-hit games, while shortstop
Matt Reardon (Palm City, Fla./Martin County HS) extended the nation's longest active hitting streak to 27 games with a beautiful bunt single down the third-base line in the bottom of the seventh. Additionally, Selesky extended his career-high on-base streak to 28 games after going 2-for-2 with a sacrifice fly and sacrifice bunt Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles and Highlanders will be right back for the series finale tomorrow at 1 p.m. when FGCU freshman
Ryan Lang (2-3, 6.32) will take the mound opposite NJIT starter Bryan Haberstroh (0-3, 5.53).
