SORRENTO, Fla. – The FGCU women's golf team rebounded in Tuesday's play to finish the Morehead State University Spring Citrus Challenge in fifth place. The Eagles shot a 295 in the third round at the Red Tail Golf Club to complete the event at 906 (294-317-295). The 295 stood as the field's lowest team score during Tuesday's round.

The Eagles held 10th place in the 20-team field after Monday's second round but saw a strong final round from all five players to increase their standing on the leaderboard. The Green and Blue finished just seven strokes behind the event's winners as Western Kentucky, Elon and James Madison tied for the tournament championship with three-round scores of 899. North Florida took fourth place in the field with a total mark of 904, with the Eagles checking in just two strokes behind. The Eagles finished ahead of 15 of the event's teams including host Morehead State and Atlantic Sun Conference foe Stetson.

"I was very proud of the determination we displayed to achieve such a great comeback," said assistant coach
Katie Detlefsen. "Our game plan was to focus on the process and walk with confidence no matter what and we accomplished that goal. As a team, we are starting to play like we belong at the top of the leaderboard. We showed grit and managed the course well. Posting the low final round is huge as we look ahead to the conference tournament."

Mei Khuan Yong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia/ S.M.K. Cochrane) led the Green and Blue with a 13th-place finish. The senior carded a 73 in the final round to complement previous scores of 73 and 79. Yong finished at 225 through the three-round event and placed among the top-15 in a field of over 100 golfers.

Megan Blonien (Altus, Okla./Altus High School/Oklahoma State) finished the event with a total score just one stroke behind Yong. Blonien carded a 74 in the final round to finish at 226 (73, 79, 74) in a tie for 18th place.

Sophomore
Madison Easterbrook (Burlington, Ontario/Aldershot High School) finished in the top-20 with a final score of 229. Easterbrook shot a 75 in the third round to go with earlier rounds of 75 and 79.

Senior
Sara Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn./Minnesota Virtual Academy) and freshman
Madeline Marck-Sherk (Ridgeway, Ontario/Ridgeway Crystal Beach High School) rounded out the Green and Blue's lineup with total scores of 235 and 233, respectively. Marck-Sherk carded a 73 in the final round and finished plus-17 through the three-round event, while Detlefsen fired a 75 to shave five strokes off her previous two scores.

While competing as an individual, freshman
Kelsy Holbert (Lutz, Fla./Steinbrenner High School) recorded the team's best single-round score of the event. Holbert carded an even-par score of 72 in Tuesday's round to finish at 232 on the week. The rookie took a tie for 46th place overall to best more than half the field.

The Eagles will continue the spring season with one final event before the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship. The team will compete at the Georgia State John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate Sunday, Mar. 27 to Tuesday, Mar. 29 in Stockbridge, Ga. The A-Sun Championship will follow April 10 to 12 in Kissimmee, Fla.

Head coach Sarah Trew enters her fifth season at the helm of the FGCU women's golf team. Trew took over in 2011 and has since guided the Eagles to the program's best-ever finish in the Atlantic Sun Tournament and to 20+ top-10 finishes. A year ago, Trew led the team to several records on and off the course. The 2013-14 squad set a new single-season scoring record with a team average of 307.88, while also setting a new benchmark academically. The team earned a team grade point average of 3.8 in the fall semester and set the FGCU team record with a 3.92 during the spring of 2014. The spring of 2015 saw the Eagles again take third place at the A-Sun Championship, and recording their best team score of the season.Â
