@FGCU_WGolf Stands Among Top Half Through Two Rounds at MSU Citrus Challenge

Eagles card a 317 in the second round

SORRENTO, Fla. – The FGCU women's golf team carded a 317 Monday, Mar. 21 at the Morehead State University Spring Citrus Challenge. The Eagles fell in the standings but remain among the top half of the 20-team field in 10th place after two rounds at Red Tail Golf Club.

FGCU shot a plus-6 score of 294 in Monday's round but followed with the 317 while facing tough conditions. The Eagles now stand in 10th place in the 20-team field with a total score of 611. The Green and Blue are just two strokes out of ninth place and seven strokes from a top-five finish. After two rounds, Elon and James Madison hold shares of the top position on the leaderboard with scores of 597, while Western Kentucky holds third at 602. Host Morehead State stands tied for fourth with Ball State and North Florida with scores of 604 with one round to play.

"Today didn't go as planned," said head coach Sarah Trew. "We struggled with the cold and windy weather and a delay on the course when we should have been able to manage a decent round. Even with our subpar performance today, we learned a lot so we can be prepared for tomorrow. In our final round, we'll need to get back to our original mindset so we can manage a good finish."

Megan Blonien (Altus, Okla./Altus High School/Oklahoma State) and Mei Khuan Yong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia/ S.M.K. Cochrane) top the team's performers through two rounds, each with a score of 152. Blonien and Yong both carded a 73 in the opening round and shot a 79 in Monday's play. The duo stands among the top-25 players with the plus-8 total scores.

Sophomore Madison Easterbrook (Burlington, Ontario/Aldershot High School) stands just two strokes behind Blonien and Yong with a two-round score of 154. Easterbrook carded a 75 in the first round and matched Blonien and Yong's 79 in Monday's round. The sophomore is plus-10 and holds a tie at 39th in the field.

Senior Sara Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn./Minnesota Virtual Academy) and freshman Madeline Marck-Sherk (Ridgeway, Ontario/Ridgeway Crystal Beach High School) round out the Green and Blue's lineup with total scores of 160. Detlefsen recorded rounds of 80 in each of the two rounds so far, while Marck-Sherk produced a 73 in the opening round and struggled with an 87 in Monday's play.

Kelsy Holbert (Lutz, Fla./Steinbrenner High School) matched Detlefsen's score on both days and stands even with the senior and Marck-Sherk at 160 through two rounds while playing as an individual.

The Eagles will play one final round at the MSU Spring Citrus Challenge Tuesday, Mar. 22. The tournament concludes with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. Live scoring for the Citrus Challenge will not be available but complete results will be available at FGCUAthletics.com following the round.

Head coach Sarah Trew enters her fifth season at the helm of the FGCU women's golf team. Trew took over in 2011 and has since guided the Eagles to the program's best-ever finish in the Atlantic Sun Tournament and to 20+ top-10 finishes. A year ago, Trew led the team to several records on and off the course. The 2013-14 squad set a new single-season scoring record with a team average of 307.88, while also setting a new benchmark academically. The team earned a team grade point average of 3.8 in the fall semester and set the FGCU team record with a 3.92 during the spring of 2014. The spring of 2015 saw the Eagles again take third place at the A-Sun Championship, and recording their best team score of the season.
