@FGCU_WGolf Aims For Strong Finish at Eagle Invitational

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Led by senior Mei Khuan Yong for the second-straight day, the FGCU women's golf team finds itself in fourth place and only two shots out of second following Saturday's second-round action of the Eagle Invitational held at Stonybrook Golf Club.

FGCU entered the day in third place but dropped one position after recording a 306 on Saturday, giving them a two-day total of 609. The Green and Blue got off to a slow start in the morning as they made the turn at 18-over, but made up some ground on their way into the clubhouse. Mercer extended its one-shot lead to a comfortable 13-shot advantage after shooting a 5-over-par 293, good for a two-day score of 594. Toledo remains in second with a two-day score of 607 and sits one shot ahead of Elon, who made the jump from fifth to third after posting a second-round score of 302. Xavier rounds out the top five after carding back-to-back scores of 305.

"We struggled a little bit more today than yesterday," said FGCU head coach Sarah Trew. "We got off to a bad start and had some big numbers. However, I'm proud of the way we turned it around and still managed to get into the clubhouse with a decent number. I think we're going to need to play very well and get a little help tomorrow if we want to win, but only a couple of shots separate us from second place. This team is tough and I know each and every one of these girls can shoot under par. Tomorrow, we are just going to try to eliminate those big numbers and see if we can put up a good score."

Coming off an even-par round of 72 on Friday, Yong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia/S.M.K. Cochrane) finds herself tied for second after shooting a 73 on Saturday, giving her a two-day total of 145 and trailing leader Payton Schanen (Mercer) by four strokes. The Kuala Lumpur native is one of two golfers in the 83-player field to shot a 73 or better in back-to-back rounds to start the tournament. Yong carded eight-straight pars to begin the day before dropping a pair of shots on holes eight and 13. However, she responded with a birdie on the 15th to register the 1-over-par total.

Freshman Madeline Marck-Sherk (Ridgeway, Ontario/Ridgeway Crystal Beach High School) made her way up the leaderboard after carding a 75 on Saturday. She entered the day tied for 20th and currently finds herself tied for 13th after the 3-over-par round. The Ontario native birdied three of her last nine holes but coupled each with a dropped shot on her way in.

Despite struggling to a quadruple bogie on her second hole of the day, redshirt junior Megan Blonien (Altus, Okla./Altus High School/Oklahoma State) wrapped up the second round with her second-straight score of 78 and finds herself tied for 32nd with teammate Sara Detlefsen (Eagen, Minn./Minnesota Virtual Academy), who shot an 80.

Like Detlefsen, Madison Easterbrook (Burlington, Ontario/Aldershot High School) and Ashley Kimbrough (Clearwater, Fla./Indian Rocks Christian School), competing as an individual, both carded 80s. FGCU's final individual player, Kelsy Holbert (Lutz, Fla./Steinbrenner High School), turned in a score of 82 on Saturday.

Final-round action of the three-day event will get underway with a reverse shotgun start Sunday at 8 a.m. Live scoring for the Eagle Invitational will be available through BirdieFire and can be found by clicking here. Complete results will be available at FGCUAthletics.com daily.
