COLUMBIA, Mo. – The FGCU women's golf team cut 14 strokes off its second-round score and produced a team mark of 294 in the final round of competition Tuesday, Sept. 29 at the 2015 Johnie Imes Invitational. The Eagles finish with a total score of 909 (307-308-294) for 16th place in the field.

Tournament host Missouri topped the field through all three rounds and ultimately earned the event championship with a score of 825 (280-269-276). The Tigers finished at 39-under with help from the top-three individuals, who compiled three-round scores of 15-under and 9-under. Middle Tennessee, Kansas State and Iowa all produced scores of even or better, while FIU rounded out the top-five with an 871 (290-295-286).

With a +6 score in the third round that featured all five scores at or below 78, the Eagles jumped ahead of Arkansas State and Illinois State and finished just seven strokes behind Bradley.

"We played much better today," said head coach
Sarah Trew. "This is a very talented group and I am excited about the future of this program. We just need a few tournaments to get settled in and get our competitive feet wet. We are going to have some ups and downs but I am so proud of how the ladies bounced back today. They never gave up and fought for every shot. I'm proud of Jean [Tyrrell] for her round today and of Sara [Detlefsen] for her overall performance."

Seniors
Sara Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn./Minnesota Virtual Academy) and
Mei Khuan Yong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia/S.M.K. Cochrane) each carded even-par scores of 72 through the final round Tuesday to lead the team.

Detlefsen started on hole 15 with a par and followed with birdies on 16 and 17. She recorded bogeys on 3 and 5 and stood even entering her last three holes. She added one more birdie and a single bogey to finish the round. Detlefsen combined that performance with two plus-3 rounds Monday to finish at 222 on the week (75-75-72) and place among the top-40 individuals and atop the team standings.

Yong started her final round with three-consecutive birdies and produced 12 par holes and just three bogeys over the final 15 holes to remain even through the day. Yong carded scores of 76 and 77 in the first two rounds to finish with a 225.

Freshman
Jean Tyrrell (Leawood, Ks./Blue Valley North High School) improved 10 strokes from her second-round score with a plus-1 mark of 73 in the final round of her first collegiate event. Tyrrell was consistent through her round with 15 par scores, two bogeys and one birdie to shoot a 73. The freshman finished at 238 (82-83-73).

Megan Blonien (Altus, Okla./Altus High School/Oklahoma State) and freshman
Madeline Marck-Sherk (Ridgeway, Ontario/Ridgeway Crystal Beach High School) rounded out the team's scores from Tuesday's round with cards of 77 and 78, respectively. Blonien finished the event at 233 with scores of 74, 82 and 77, while Marck-Sherk carded scores of 84, 74 and 78 for a 236.

The Eagles will conclude the fall slate Sunday, Oct. 25 – Tuesday, Oct. 27 at the FIU Pat Bradley Invitational in Lakewood Ranch. The three-day event features one of the largest fields in collegiate golf and is played on a familiar course for the Green and Blue.

Head coach Sarah Trew enters her fifth season at the helm of the FGCU women's golf team. Trew took over in 2011 and has since guided the Eagles to the program's best-ever finish in the Atlantic Sun Tournament and to 20+ top-10 finishes. A year ago, Trew led the team to several records on and off the course. The 2013-14 squad set a new single-season scoring record with a team average of 307.88, while also setting a new benchmark academically. The team earned a team grade point average of 3.8 in the fall semester and set the FGCU team record with a 3.92 during the spring of 2014. The spring of 2015 saw the Eagles again take third place at the A-Sun Championship, and recording their best team score of the season. Â
