Sherwin Earns Spot In Lubbock Region Of NCAA Men’s Golf Championship

INDIANAPOLIS – FGCU men's golfer Jake Sherwin learned on Monday that his standout junior campaign would continue for at least another few weeks when he was selected to participate in the 2015 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship. The show aired live on the Golf Channel, and Sherwin was one of 10 individuals chosen to compete in the Lubbock Region May 14-16.

Sherwin (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) was one of 45 at-large individual selections into the field and will be teeing it up at Texas Tech's home track – The Rawls Course. There are six 54-hole regional tournaments which will be conducted. Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals, while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams.

The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals May 29-June 3 at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla. South Florida is the host institution for the 2015 championship, which will be broadcast on the Golf Channel.

Last Thursday, Sherwin was named to the Atlantic Sun Conference Second Team and on Friday was tabbed as an A-Sun Academic Team selection. Sherwin led FGCU with a 72.78 scoring average – nearly two shots better than any other Green and Blue member. In nine tournaments in 2014-15, Sherwin finished in the top 10 five times, top 15 seven times and top 20 an astonishing eight times.

"This is an incredible honor for Jake and also for the program," stated FGCU head coach Eric Booker. "He has established himself as not only one of the best golfers in the A-Sun, but now also the country as proven by this selection. Jake has worked extremely hard, and I'm glad to see that rewarded."

Sherwin is the third FGCU men's golfer in only four years of eligibility to be selected to the NCAA Championship. In 2012 Brandon Pena competed in the Athens Region, and in 2013 Edward Figueroa was selected to the Tallahassee Region. Sherwin will be the sixth different FGCU representative at NCAA championships this year alone, joining men's soccer, women's soccer, women's basketball, swimming & diving and men's tennis. The Eagles now have an incredible 20 NCAA team or individual championship appearances since 2011-12.

In addition to Sherwin, the A-Sun will be represented at the 2015 NCAA Championship by North Florida and Kennesaw State as the Ospreys won the league tournament and automatic berth into the field while the Owls received an at-large selection. Furthermore, USC Upstate's Ryan Cornfield and Lipscomb's Dawson Armstrong each received individual selections. UNF is seeded 4th in the Lubbock Region, while Kennesaw State is also seeded 4th but in the Chapel Hill Region (hosted by North Carolina). Cornfield and Armstrong are both also in the Chapel Hill Region.

During the spring, Sherwin orchestrated one of the best stretches of play in D-I program history as four of his top-10 finishes came in consecutive weeks, including three-straight top-6 finishes or better. His best showing was a tie for 2nd out of 113 golfers at the FAU Slomin Autism Invitational Mar. 27-29 when he carded a three-round 211 (-2) total.

In posting five rounds in the 60s this year, Sherwin was responsible for half of FGCU's 10 total rounds in the 60s. He was also responsible for half (13) of the Eagles' par-or-better rounds (26) on the season. The low round(s) of his career and season came on two occasions as he shot a 67 (-5) on Sept. 15 as part of the Saint Mary's Invitational and then again on Mar. 15 (67, -4) at the Talis Park Challenge.

In 27 rounds on the season, Sherwin's score was used in FGCU's team total 25 times, including a stretch of 22 in a row to end the season. To conclude the regular season, Sherwin posted eight-straight rounds of par or better (six of which were under par), and for the spring season – excluding the A-Sun Championship in which he finished tied for 19th – 10 of his 12 rounds overall were even par of better.

Sherwin's 72.78 scoring average for the year is currently the 9th-best in FGCU single-season program history (2000-01 for men's golf). His 13 par-or-better rounds are tied for the 6th most in a single season. Sherwin has rolled in 92 birdies this year to also tie for the 6th-most in a single year, and his three eagles are tied for the 3rd-best in single-season history. Sherwin played par-5 holes to a stroke average of 4.72 this year to rank as the 6th-best performance in single-season history, and his 135 (-7) total at the Talis Park Challenge was the 4th-best 36-hole outing posted in program history.

For his career, Sherwin has a 74.81 scoring average to rank 13th in program history. His 25 par-or-better rounds are tied for the 6th-most all-time, and his 90 rounds played are just 16 shy of breaking the program record. Of those rounds, Sherwin's score has been used in the team total 73 times – 7th-best all-time and just 25 shy of the record. Additionally, Sherwin is 4th on FGCU's career birdies list with 249, just 64 shy of setting the program record. He's also just four eagles shy of establishing that record as well as he has six on his career.
