No. 3 @FGCU_WTEN Advances to A-Sun Semifinal with Win Over No. 6 Kennesaw State

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The third-seeded FGCU women's tennis team wasted no time defeating No. 6 Kennesaw State in its A-Sun quarterfinal matchup, as it won by a 4-0 score on Friday morning at the North Florida Tennis Complex.

The Green and Blue improve their record to 9-11 on the season, while Kennesaw State ends its season at 3-14. The Eagles will take on second-seeded Stetson (15-4, 5-1 A-Sun) in the semifinals on Saturday, Apr. 18 at 9 a.m. The match will be played outdoors at the UNF Tennis Complex.

"The girls played with a lot of focus today," said head coach Courtney Vernon. "We are looking forward to playing Stetson again tomorrow, it should be a good match."

The duo of Breana Stampfli (Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Joseph's Convent) and Candela Munoz Giron (Alicante, Spain/Troy) defeated Isabela Castro and Gabriela Bueno by an 8-4 count in the No. 2 slot. The sister duo of Elizabeth and Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) picked up the second match win in doubles play against Virginie Stein and Jana Hueckinghaus to give the Eagles the first point by an 8-3 score in the No. 1 doubles slot.

Extending FGCU's lead to 2-0 was Stampfli who needed just two sets to oust Kennesaw State's Alexandra Mercado in the No. 3 slot. After taking the first set, 6-1, the sophomore continued to control the second set with a 6-0 win.

All-Conference Second Team member Munoz Giron continued the Green and Blue's success when she earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Castro in the No. 4 slot. Clinching the match for FGCU was junior Alex Landert (Naples, Fla./Seton Hall). Facing Ashleigh De Wet in the No. 6 slot, Landert took both sets by a 6-3, 7-5 count.
