@FGCU_WGolf Takes Third Place in #ASunWGolf Championship

Detlefsen lead the team in the third round with a career-best score

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The FGCU women's golf team captured third place at the 2015 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles carded a team score of 309 in Tuesday's final round at the Reunion Resort to finish the three-day event with a total score of 910 (303-298-309), just eight strokes out of second place.

The team held runner-up status through the first and second rounds, but was narrowly edged by North Florida in Tuesday's final round. Kennesaw State maintained its top position, carding a 293 in the final round to earn the conference title, while UNF shot 292 Tuesday to finish at 902 through three rounds. The Eagles concluded the season ahead of Jacksonville, Stetson, Lipscomb, Northern Kentucky and USC Upstate and took a top-four finish for the fourth time in the last five years.

"Obviously we are left with a sour taste with the way we played and dropping a spot," said head coach Sarah Trew. "This is certainly not what we envisioned when we talked about our game last night, but you have to tip your hat to UNF for their play today. We got off to a little bit of a bumpy start then settled down during the middle of the round. We still have a ton of positives to take away from this event. We tied our best finish ever with a solo third-place finish. We had some solid low rounds and our ball striking was awesome. I think the future is very bright for FGCU golf."

Kennesaw's championship performance was aided by the top-three individual performances. Dulcie Sverdloff maintained the top ranking through three rounds and earned the individual crown with a minus-one score of 215.

Sara Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn./Minnesota Virtual Academy) led the Eagles in the third round with a personal best score of 70. Detlefsen carded scores of 77 and 79 in the first two rounds and shaved strokes off her score with birdies on holes 1, 3 and 5. She carded just one bogey on the day with 14 even par holes to finish among the field's top 10. She ended the event at plus-10 with a total score of 226 and a ninth-place finish.

"I could not be more proud of Sara for her play today," added Trew. "She had her career low a few weeks ago and broke through again this week. She is an amazing person and has the best attitude of any player I've ever coached."

Mei Khuan Yong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia/S.M.K. Cochrane) took the team's top position overall with an eighth-place finish. In the final round, Yong shot 79 with seven bogeys. She carded scores of 74 and 72 during the first two rounds and finished at 225 through the tournament.

Chelsea Guoynes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central High School) produced scores of 73 and 75 on Sunday and Monday but struggled in Tuesday's final round. The senior carded just one birdie on the day and finished at plus-9. Guoynes' final round resulted in a 229 total score for 16th place.

Freshman Madison Easterbrook (Burlington, Ontario/Aldershot High School) and senior Georgia Price (Bude, England/Fort Myers High School) rounded out the team's producers with third-round scores of 79 and 83, respectively. Easterbrook finished in a tie for 20th place with a total score of 232, while Price concluded her career with a three-round total of 240.

"I want to thank our seniors Chelsea and Georgia," Trew noted. "They are the first group I have been with for four years and they take so much pride in being an Eagle. They are the epitome of school spirit and have truly made the program better. I wish them nothing but the best in their future endeavors."

Head coach Sarah Trew is in her fourth season at the helm of the FGCU women's golf team. Trew took over in 2011 and has since guided the Eagles to the program's best-ever finish in the Atlantic Sun Tournament and to 20+ top-10 finishes. A year ago, Trew led the team to several records on and off the course. The 2013-14 squad set a new single-season scoring record with a team average of 307.88, while also setting a new benchmark academically. The team earned a team grade point average of 3.8 in the fall semester and set the FGCU team record with a 3.92 during the spring of 2014. The spring of 2015 saw the Eagles again take third place at the A-Sun Championship, and recording their best team score of the season.
