@FGCU_WTEN Rounds Out Regular Season at Stetson

DeLAND, Fla. - After winning its senior day match against Marquette, the FGCU women's tennis team travels to Stetson to round out the regular season. The match has major implications heading into the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship. The winner of this match will take the No. 2 seed in the conference and receive a first round bye. The match is slated for Saturday, Apr. 11 at 10 a.m. at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.  

The Eagles are 8-10 overall and are 4-1 in conference play with their only A-Sun loss coming to conference leader North Florida.

FGCU is led by Johanna Sterkel (Schwetzingen, Germany/Carl-Theodor-Schule HS) in singles play. The junior holds a dual-match season record of 14-3 and a 10-2 mark in the No. 3 slot.

In their last match against Marquette, the Eagles bested the Golden Eagles by a 5-2 score. The duo of Breana Stampfli (Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Joseph's Convent) and Candela Munoz Giron (Alicante, Spain/Troy) defeated Ali Dawson and Aleeza Kanner by an 8-3 score in the No. 2 doubles slot while Sterkel and Alex Landert (Naples, Fla./Seton Hall) picked up the second match win in doubles play over Paula Tormos Sanchez and Diana Tokar to give the Eagles the first point by an 8-7 (10-8) score in the No. 3 doubles slot.

In singles, senior Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS), Stampfli, Munoz Giron and Sterkel won their matches. Sterkel was the only one of the four to go three sets, winning a third set tiebreaker 10-5.

SCOUTING STETSON
The Hatters are led by freshman Alizee Michaud and Ashley Dean who are 8-5 in doubles play. In singles, Michaud is No. 86 in the Apr. 7 ITA Division I women's rankings and has an overall record of 14-0. Dean is 14-2 in singles play and is unbeaten in the No. 4-6 slots. Her two losses came in the No. 3 slot.

Stetson is 14-4 on the season with a conference record of 4-1. The Hatters only A-Sun loss came to North Florida.  

NEXT UP
The A-Sun Championship will get underway next weekend (Apr. 17-19) at the UNF Tennis Complex in Jacksonville, Fla. Last year, the Eagles fell in the semifinals to former A-Sun member East Tennessee State University, 4-1.
