OCALA, Fla. – With a top-20 finish from
Chelsea Guoynes, the FGCU women's golf team captured 12th place at the 2015 Ocala Spring Invitational. The team carded a team score of 315 during the third round at Juliette Falls Golf Resort and finished with a three-day total of 924 (307-302-315).

South Dakota State maintained the top position among the 18-team field through three days of competition and earned the tournament title with a team score of 899 (297-300-302). Daytona State took second with a 900, while Murray State, Western Kentucky and South Alabama all tied for third at 902, 22 strokes ahead of the Green and Blue.

Daytona State's Tiffany Chan took the individual crown with a score of 211. Chan carded par rounds of 72 in the first two rounds and exploded for a 67 in the final day of play.

"We are disappointed with our finish today," said head coach
Sarah Trew. "We made a few mental mistakes coming in and gave away a fair share of shots. We just played mediocre across the board, however our bad rounds are starting to get lower. We can learn a lot from this tournament as we prepare for Georgia State and Conference."

Guoynes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central High School) took the top position on the FGCU squad with a total score of 226. Guoynes finished among the top-20 in the field with scores of 74 and 72 in the first two rounds. Guoynes struggled slightly in the final round, carding the team's highest score of the day at 80 but finished just four strokes out of the top-10.

Senior
Georgia Price (Bude, England/Fort Myers High School) led the team in the third round with a score of 78 and finished with a total score of 234 after carding consistent scores of 77, 79 and 78 in the three-day event.

Junior
Sara Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn./Minnesota Virtual Academy) finished tied for 33rd in the field with a total score of 230. Detlefsen scored a 79 in the final round after shooting 76 and 75 in the first two rounds.

Mei Khuan Yong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia/S.M.K. Cochrane) and freshman
Madison Easterbrook (Burlington, Ontario/Aldershot High School) also shot 79 in the final round in Ocala. Yong ended the event with a score of 235, while Easterbrook shot 247 through three rounds.

While competing as an individual,
Rebecca VanEtten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell High School) carded a total score of 249 with rounds of 81, 82 and 86.

The women's golf team continues action at Georgia State's John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate next weekend with three rounds beginning Sunday, Mar. 29. Following the Statesboro, Ga. based event, the Eagles will travel to Kissimmee for the 2015 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship April 12-14.

Head coach Sarah Trew is in her fourth season at the helm of the FGCU women's golf team. Trew took over in 2011 and has since guided the Eagles to the program's best-ever finish in the Atlantic Sun Tournament and to 20+ top-10 finished. A year ago, Trew led the team to several records on and off the course. The 2013-14 squad set a new single-season scoring record with a team average of 307.88, while also setting a new benchmark academically. The team earned a team grade point average of 3.8 in the fall semester and set the FGCU team record with a 3.92 during the spring of 2014.
