OCALA, Fla. – Backed again by solid play from
Chelsea Guoynes and
Sara Detlefsen, the FGCU women's golf team improved its second-round score by five shots from its first round as the Eagles carded a 302 total Monday afternoon at the Morehead State-hosted Ocala Spring Invitational at Juliette Falls Golf Resort and are in 11th place in a tightly-compacted field.
Guoynes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central HS) carded an even-round 72 on Monday, which coupled with her 74 on Sunday gives the senior a two-round total of 146 – good for the best score in the Eagles' lineup and tied for sixth overall.
Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn./Minnesota Virtual Academy), meanwhile, signed for a 75 on the difficult track, and the junior has a two-round 151 total following a 76 on Monday – good for a tie for 25th overall in the field of more than 100 golfers.
FGCU is just three shots behind fellow Atlantic Sun Conference member North Florida as the Ospreys are tied for ninth. Daytona State College leads the 18-team tournament with a 596 total – only 13 shots ahead of the Eagles (609). Daytona State moved from ninth place on Sunday to the clubhouse lead on Monday, while Sunday's overnight leader South Alabama fell to eighth following action on Monday. The Eagles enter Tuesday's final round just eight shots out of the top 5.
"We played better today, and I think the team is really close to breaking through with that low round," said FGCU head coach
Sarah Trew. "Chelsea and Sara were rock stars again for us. Mei (Khuan Yong) also played better which helped us out. We still didn't make a ton of birdies, so tomorrow we will be looking to close out strong."
Khuan Yong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia/S.M.K. Cochrane) improved her second-round score by four shots from her first-round score as she posted a 76 and has a two-day total of 156 to tie her for 54th overall. One of those competitors that she's tied with is teammate
Georgia Price (Bude, England/Fort Myers HS) as the senior recorded a 79 on Monday. Freshman
Madison Easterbrook (Burlington, Ontario/Aldershot HS) rounded out the Green and Blue's lineup with an 87.
The final round will get underway on Tuesday with a 1 p.m. tee time for the Eagles. Complete results will be posted on Golf Stat and FGCUAthletics.com as soon as they become available, with a complete recap later in the day on FGCUAthletics.com.
