OCALA, Fla. - Backed by strong play from upperclassmen, the FGCU women's golf team carded a team score of 307 and took hold of 10th place after one round of the 2015 Ocala Spring Invitational at the Juliette Falls Golf Resort. The Eagles sit 14 strokes behind tournament leader South Alabama, who carded a 293 in Sunday's round.
 
South Dakota State holds the second-place standing with a team score of 297, while Stephen F. Austin and Stetson are tied for third at 298. FGCU stands tied for 10th with the University of North Florida, while Richmond, Akron, Nebraska, Austin Peay, Ball State, Embry Riddle and the University of Tampa stand behind the Eagles.
 
"We started off pretty well today," explained head coach Sarah Trew. "Chelsea [Guoynes] and Sara [Detlefsen] had really good rounds for us. We are so close to playing really, really well, we just need to get that fourth score under 80. We didn't have a whole lot of birdies today with the team and that is unusual for us, so if we can sink a few more pars tomorrow we are going to be right there."

Chelsea Guoynes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central High School) led the Eagles with a 74 through the first round and sits tied at 11th in the field of over 100 golfers. With the plus-two score, Guoynes ranks just two strokes out of the top-five in the field.
 
Second on the team is junior Sara Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn./Minnesota Virtual Academy) who carded a 76 in the first round and sits tied at 33rd.
 
Senior Georgia Price (Bude, England/Fort Myers High School) finished just one stroke behind Detlefsen with a 77 and ranks 41st in the field.
 
Mei Khuan Yong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia/S.M.K. Cochrane) and freshman Madison Easterbrook (Burlington, Ontario/Aldershot High School) rounded out the Green and Blue's representation with scores of 80 and 81. 
 
FGCU will play two more rounds at the Juliette Falls Golf Resort Mar. 23 and 24 with a 1 p.m. tee time. Complete results will be posted on Golf Stat and FGCUAthletics.com at the conclusion of each round.
