FORT MYERS, Fla – After taking on a trio of ultra-competitive opponents (La Tech, Middle Tennessee, No. 67 Georgia State) two weekends ago in Atlanta, the FGCU women's tennis team (1-4) will host the University of South Florida (1-4) Tuesday Feb. 10 at the FGCU Tennis Complex at 1 p.m.
LAST TIME OUTThe Green and Blue took on No. 67 Georgia State, their second nationally ranked opponent they faced this season, on the final day in Atlanta. The Eagles fought with all their might after dropping the doubles point, but ultimately lost to the Panthers by a score of 4-2. Sophomore
Breana Stampfil (Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Joseph's Convent) posted a big upset win in the No. 3 singles slot against ITA No. 69 Linn Timmermann by a score of 7-5, 7-6, her first win over a ranked opponent this spring season.
SCOUTING USFThe Bulls finished last season with a dominating 18-4 record, the American Conference Championship Title and a 2014 NCAA Tournament appearance. Despite the 1-4 record this season, USF has faced four nationally ranked opponents in No. 2 Florida, No. 18 Georgia Tech, No. 33 Florida State and No. 53 Syracuse.
Olaya Garrido-Rivas leads the Bulls' singles lineup with a 2-2 record in the No.1 slot. During their last contest against No. 18 Georgia Tech, Garrido-Rivas posted an upset win over ITA No. 63 Johnnise Renaud 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. Garrido-Rivas also occupies the No. 1 doubles slot with Jessica Cortes Chaves with a 2-3 record.
FGCU is 0-3 all-time against USF, and 0-1 since head coach
Courtney Vernon's arrival in the 2013-14 season. Vernon, a USF tennis alumnus went 26-0 in the 2006 spring season and also served as the Bulls' assistant coach in the 2012-13 season, will be looking for her first victory against her alma mater.
NEXT UPFGCU will head to the Capital of the Sunshine State to take on No. 33 Florida State this Saturday, Feb. 14.
