@FGCU_WTEN Earns Second Win of Season Over FAU

FORT MYERS, Fla. – After enduring a challenging schedule, the FGCU women's tennis team (2-6) picked up its second win on the season over in-state foe FAU (2-3) on Wednesday afternoon. It was a clean match for the Eagles as they picked up the win, 7-0, at the FGCU Tennis Complex.

"The ladies played with focus today," said head coach Courtney Vernon. "It was great that they stayed focused with the wind playing a factor. Each new challenge brings another opportunity, we will continue to work and look forward to playing Miami on Friday."

The duo of Elizabeth Means and Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) defeated the Owls' pair of Briggs and Cardullo by a 6-1 count in the No. 1 doubles slot while Breanna Stampfli (Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Joseph's Convent) and Candela Munoz Giron (Alicante, Spain/Troy) picked up the second match win in doubles play to give the Eagles the first point by a 6-2 score in the No. 3 doubles slot.

The first singles victory of the afternoon came from Elizabeth Means in the No. 5 slot when she made quick work of Briggs with a 6-0, 6-0 win.  Stampfli gave the Green and Blue their third point on the day when she won by a 6-1, 6-3 count over Ene in the No. 2 slot. Munoz Giron clinched the victory for the Eagles in the No. 4 slot when she defeated Ruiz of the Owls 6-1, 6-2.

Shortly after Munoz Giron won the match for the Eagles, Sarah Means won the fifth match of the day with a 6-2, 6-4 score in the No. 1 slot over Cardullo. Julianna Curtis (Tampa, Fla./Allendale Academy) picked up the sixth win on the afternoon after a 6-4, 6-1 win over Biglione in the No. 6 slot. Johanna Sterkel (Schwetzingen, Germany/Carl-Theodor-Schule HS) won the first set 6-4 but fell in the second set 7-6. Sterkel battled in a back-and-forth third set that saw her come out on top 10-6 in the No. 3 slot to complete the clean sweep for the Eagles.

The Green and Blue will hit the road once again, as they travel to South Beach, as they face No. 9 Miami on Friday Feb. 20 at 4 p.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
