FORT MYERS, Fla – The demanding schedule continues for the FGCU women's tennis team (1-6) as the Eagles welcome FAU (2-2) Wednesday Feb. 18 at the FGCU Tennis Complex at 2 p.m.
After taking on No. 59 USF last Wednesday and No. 34 FSU last Saturday, Wednesday's contest against FAU marks the third match in eight days for The Green and Blue as they continue the search for their second win of the year.
LAST TIME OUTThis past Saturday, FGCU traveled to the Capital of the Sunshine State to take on No. 34 FSU. The Seminoles overpowered the Eagles in the doubles contest, and then quickly ended the Green and Blue's upset bid with a score of 4-0.
Sophomore
Breana Stampfli (Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Joseph's Convent) put up a fight in the No. 2 slot against Kerrie Cartwright of FSU, after falling 6-1 in the first set. The sophomore went toe-to-toe in the second set against her opponent, however Cartwright outdueled Stampfli in the second with a close score of 7-6 (1).
Despite their grueling schedule, the Green and Blue have found success in
Johanna Sterkel (Schwetzingen, Germany/Carl-Theodor-Schule HS), who has been the primary No. 4 singles player. The junior has been a strong force in the middle of the Eagles' lineup as the Schwetzingen, Germany native is currently 4-2 in the spring season after beating opponents from UCF, Louisiana Tech, Georgia State and No. 59 USF.
SCOUTING FAUFAU enters Wednesday's contest with a record of 2-2 after beating St. Petersburg College 7-0 and Georgia Southern 4-3, while falling against Bethune-Cookman 5-2 and Atlantic Sun foe Stetson 4-0.
FGCU is 3-2 all-time against FAU, during last year's contest between the two, FGCU claimed a close doubles point before heating up in the singles action, winning the No. 2 to 5 slots for a score of 5-2 for the Eagles.
NEXT UPThe Green and Blue will hit the road once again, as they travel to South Beach, as they face No. 9 Miami on Friday Feb. 20 at 4 p.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
