FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women's soccer team (5-3) rolled to 3-0 win over Wofford (3-3) on Friday night thanks to the high scoring duo of
Shannen Wacker and
Tabby Tindell who scored one and two goals, respectively, in the second half of a match that saw the Eagles out shoot their opponent 29-1. Tindell and Wacker roll into Sunday's match with CSU Bakersfield tied with 23 career goals each, just one shy of the program record set by Amber McCall in 2009.
"The first half we played well we just didn't get any goals," head coach
Jim Blankenship said. "We talked about being a little more aggressive in the attacking third whereas in the first half we were almost over passing and playing a bit slower. I thought we set the tone and played well the whole game but I felt in the second half our attitude was a little better, especially as far as being aggressive. We put more pressure on them and overall we were just faster. I was pleased with our effort and obviously pleased with the result … Tabby and Wacker are difference makers. They put the team on their shoulders and knowing them they're probably disappointed they didn't score more."
Wacker's (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa HS) score in the 49th minute went on to be the first game-winning goal of the season for the senior and the first winner not scored by
Tindell (Ocala, Fla./Trinity Catholic HS) who netted the first four. The Parker, Colo. native's second score of the season gives her 63 points (23 goals, 17 assists) in her career, five short of the program record of 68 set by Lindsay Haw (23 goals, 22 assists) in 2010.
Tindell scored her first goal of the game with a header in the 57th minute off a service from
Ashley Parks (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette HS) for her seventh score of the season and followed that up with a creative, chip-shot score in the 73rd minute to move into a tie with Wacker and Haw on the all-time goals list in just her second season in the Green and Blue. With an assist to go with her two goals on Friday the Ocala, Fla. native becomes just the fourth individual in program history to reach the 50-point plateau with 53 (23 goals, 7 assists).
FGCU applied pressure from the start in this one, never allowing Wofford to gain any solid footing as the shot total in the first half closed at 12-1. Entering the match the Eagles were averaging just 9.6 shots per game. Wofford goalkeeper Shonte Campbell made four saves in the first half and would finish with 10 in the game.
In the second half the Green and Blue would finally light up the scoreboard on just their second shot of the frame. Tindell carried the ball deep into Wofford territory and beat her defender on her way into the box before sliding the ball to a wide-open Wacker who finished low past the diving goalkeeper to push FGCU ahead, 1-0.
The Eagles would fire five more shots before, in the 57th minute,
Julia Roddar (Falun, Sweden/Shattuck-St. Mary's Secondary School/Wisconsin) found Parks down the left sideline who sent a perfect cross into the box and found the head of Tindell who never moved before redirecting the ball into the back of the net.
It would be Parks again in the 73rd minute who would serve Tindell alone in the box. The sophomore took on Campbell one-on-one before opting to chip the ball over her head which resulting in a bouncing goal to put a ribbon on this one. Blankenship would clear the bench from that point forward as the Eagles were able to close out the shutout.
Parks' two assists are a career best and 29 shots for the Green and Blue are a season high.
Brittany Brown (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena HS) earns her third shutout of the season and needed to make just one save in the first night game of the season.
CSU BAKERSFIELDOn Sunday the Green and Blue will welcome CSU Bakersfield (1-7-1) all the way from Bakersfield, California who defeated FAU, 2-1 in double overtime, in Boca Raton on Friday night. The Roadrunners are off to a difficult start to the 2014 season having scored just five goals against 22 allowed in nine matches.
NEXT UPThe Eagles hit the road once again, this time for four-straight beginning with a trip to Jacksonville, Fla. for a date with North Florida, to begin the defense of their A-Sun regular season title. FGCU downed the Ospreys 3-0 at the FGCU Soccer Complex last season and hold a 5-1-1 all-time series lead. So far this season UNF has posted a 1-7 record with the lone victory coming in the form of a 2-1 result opposite The Citadel.
From Jacksonville the Eagles will fly north to Philadelphia to take on the Explorers of La Salle on Sept. 28. La Salle was 15-5-3 last season and 5-2-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Explorers won their second-consecutive A-10 title on penalty kicks over Dayton, advancing to the NCAA Tournament where they fell to Georgetown, 2-0. It will be FGCU's first meeting with La Salle. The Explorers are 3-3-2 this season with victories over Northeastern, Pittsburgh and James Madison. They fell, 4-1, at No. 21 West Virginia on Friday night and welcome former A-10 foe Temple before welcoming the Eagles.
