Women's Tennis | 2/22/2014 12:00:00 AM

BOCA RATON – Picking up its first road win of 2014, The FGCU women's tennis team handed Florida Atlantic a 5-2 decision on Saturday afternoon in Boca Raton. The Eagles improve to 4-4 on the season while the Owls fall to 1-4.

“Today was a good opportunity to grow,” head coach Courtney Vernon said. “The girls were challenged and FAU fought hard. We have a lot of areas to focus on this week, but overall a win like this is always good.”

The Green and Blue got the momentum started early by clinching the doubles point after reigning victorious in two matches. Posting a win in the No. 1 slot were Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) and Elizabeth Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) with an 8-6 defeat of FAU's Bianca Biglione and Stephanie Cardullo. Posting the other win was the tandem of Breana Stampfli (Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Joseph's Convent) and Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) in the No. 3 slot, downing Taylor Briggs and Kandis Legall 8-7 (4).

FGCU kept the fast-paced play going into singles, picking up wins in four of the six matches. Making quick work of Cardullo was Johanna Sterkel (Schwetzingen, Germany/Carl-Theodor-Schule HS) grabbing a win in the No. 3 match, 6-1, 6-1. Joining Sterkel with in swift fashion was Candela Munoz (Alicante, Spain/Troy) as she downed Claire-Mitchell Andrews, 6-1, 6-2, in the No. 5 slot.

The remaining two wins came from Stampfli and Elizabeth Means playing No. 2 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Stampfli posted a 6-4, 7-6 win victory over Cardullo, while Means topped Lyndsey Boos 7-5, 3-6, 7-5.

Once they return to The Nest, the Eagles will welcome Troy for a dual match on Mar. 9 at 2 p.m. For complete coverage of FGCU women's tennis follow us on Twitter at @FGCU_WTEN and visit www.FGCUAthletics.com where full recaps and results will be available at the end of each day
