LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – With a combined team score of 306, the FGCU women's golf team took hold of sixth place after the first round of competition at the 37
th Annual Pat Bradley Invitational. Sunday's round at Lakewood Ranch Country Club saw the Eagles shoot +18 to sit among the top half of the field of 13 teams.
"Overall, we played well today," said head coach
Sarah Trew. "We avoided the big numbers and played our most consistent round since September. We still have a couple areas to improve but we have two more rounds that we can capitalize on. I think we feel very comfortable our here and that is giving us the confidence we need. I feel like we are starting to see what we are capable of and that should give us a boost to end the year on a high note."
The team's score sits just one stroke out of the top five which is comprised of Memphis, Daytona State, FIU, Jacksonville and North Florida. Memphis' total score of 288 leads the field, while Daytona State and the host also hold scores of better than +10.
Individually, the Eagles were led by freshman
Madison Easterbrook (Burlington, Ontario/Aldershot High School) who carded a plus-2 score of 74 in the first round. The rookie recorded five bogeys with birdies on holes 8, 12 and 17 in the opening round of the three-day event and currently stands in a tie for 12th place in the field.
Mei Khuan Yong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia/S.M.K. Cochrane) sits just one stroke behind Easterbrook with a score of 75 after one round. The score places Yong in 17th place. The junior carded a double bogey on hole 1 with bogeys on 14, 17 and 18 but finished with birdies on 10 and 13 to rank second on the team.
Senior captain
Georgia Price (Bude, England/Fort Myers High School) ranks 24th in the field after one round with a +5 score of 77. Price started on the 10
th hole and saw three bogeys, a double and one birdie on her first nine holes before adding bogeys on 1 and 3 but finishing with a birdie on hole 5.
Rebecca VanEtten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell High School) rounded out the Eagles' contributors with a +8 score of 80. VanEtten sits in a tie for 41st after producing seven bogeys, a double and one birdie in Sunday's play.
Freshman
Ashley Kimbrough (Clearwater, Fla/Indian Rocks Christian School) and junior
Sara Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn./Minnesota Virtual Academy) also competed at Lakewood Ranch for the Green and Blue. Kimbrough carded a score of 84 with 10 bogeys, two doubles and two birdies, while Detlefsen recorded a +7 score of 79. While competing as an individual, Detlefsen produced nine bogeys with birdies on 12 and 17.

Trew took over in 2011 and has since guided the Eagles to the program's best-ever finish in the Atlantic Sun Tournament and to 20+ top-10 finished. A year ago, Trew led the team to several records on and off the course. The 2013-14 squad set a new single-season scoring record with a team average of 307.88, while also setting a new benchmark academically.
