DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Led by an 11th-place standing by junior Mei Khuan Yong, the FGCU women's golf team held eighth place after the first round of the2014 Xavier LPGA International Invitational.  Yong's round of 75 led to the Eagle's total score of 317 in Friday's round.

"Today we really struggled to get out of the gate," said head coach Sarah Trew. "We seem to be a little bit sluggish all day long and could never really get anything going. This tends to be our trend the first round, so tomorrow we are going to adjust a few things to try to get off to a better start. We also need to be more decisive out there when we are playing. If we can manage to make these adjustments we should be able to put together a good round Saturday."

The Eagles are currently tied for eighth place with host Xavier and the ACC's Boston College.  In the field of 13 teams, Morehead State holds the lead with a score of 295, while North Florida, Daytona State, Campbell and Bethune-Cookman round out the top five.  The Green and Blue's team score sits just five strokes behind BC-U's fifth place standing and was better than rounds produced by Stetson, Creighton and Florida Atlantic.

Yong's (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia/S.M.K. Cochrane) round of 75 topped the Eagle lineup and was strong enough to place 11th in the field of 73 golfers.  Senior Georgia Price (Bude, England/Fort Myers High School) ranks second on the team and 31st overall with a score of 79.

Sara Detlefsen  (Eagan, Minn./Minnesota Virtual Academny) carded an 81 in the Eagles' first round in Daytona for a top-50 standing, while the team's rookie duo of Ashley Kimbrough (Clearwater, Fla/Indian Rocks Christian School) and Madison Easterbrook (Burlington, Ontario/Aldershot High School) shot rounds of 82 and 84, respectively.

The Eagles will resume action at the 2014 Xavier LPGA International Invitational Saturday, Oct. 11 with an 8:30 a.m. tee time.  Live results are unavailable but second-round scores can be accessed at FGCUAthletics.com or GoXavier.com following completion.

Head coach Sarah Trew is in her fourth season at the helm of the FGCU women's golf team.  Trew took over in 2011 and has since guided the Eagles to the program's best-ever finish in the Atlantic Sun Tournament and to 20+ top-10 finished.  A year ago, Trew led the team to several records on and off the course.  The 2013-14 squad set a new single-season scoring record with a team average of 307.88, while also setting a new benchmark academically.  The team earned a team grade point average of 3.8 in the fall semester and set the FGCU team record with a 3.92 during the spring of 2014.
