DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – After the first round of play at LPGA International Golf Course, the Florida Gulf Coast University women's golf team holds 12th place at the LPGA Xavier Invitational. The Eagles shot a team score of 321 through the first 18 holes and currently sit 21 strokes behind tournament leader and local team, Daytona State.
“Today was a really rough day for us,” explained head coach Sarah Trew. “We are a much better team than the score we put up. We had a lot of big numbers out there and that makes it difficult to put together a decent score. Tomorrow we need to focus more on missing in places that we can recover from and make sure we minimize our mistakes.”
Senior Briana Carlson (Inverness, Fla./Citrus High School) led the Eagles through the first 18 holes with a score of 77. Carlson began the round on the first hole and carded a 39 on the front nine. She followed with a 38 on the back nine to finish tied for 21st among the field of nearly 100 golfers.
Junior Georgia Price (Bude, England/Fort Myers High School) ranked second for the Green and Blue with a score of 79 and a ranking of 40th in the field. Price saw a front nine score of 37 before adding several strokes to her card with a 42 on the back nine.
Chelsea Guoynes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central High School) finished among the top half of competitors and just one stroke behind Price with a score of 80, while Mei Khuan Yong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia/S.M.K. Cochrane) carded an 85. Emma Smyser (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast High School) rounded out the Eagles' lineup with an 86.
The LPGA Xavier Invitational will continue Sunday and Monday with a round of 18 each day. Results can be found at FGCUAthletics.com and at GolfStat.com.
