Eagles Top Hatters, 3-1, to Extend Winning Streak

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The first place Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team won its 14th consecutive match (13th straight Atlantic Sun Conference match) on Saturday afternoon, picking up a 3-1 (25-15, 25-14, 20-25, 25-18) decision over Stetson.

“Good team win tonight,” said head coach Dave Nichols. “I wasn't happy with our level of intensity during our serve and pass, but we came out strong in sets one and two. I think we lost our focus in the third game, but were fortunate to come away with another victory.”

The Eagles, who have only lost nine sets in conference play this season and are off to the best start to A-Sun play in program history, improved to 18-7 overall (13-0 A-Sun), while the Hatters fell to 4-26 overall (0-13 A-Sun).

Sophomore Jill Hopper (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown HS) blasted a match-high 22 kills and racked up seven digs to lead the Green and Blue. Junior Christine Pinder (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS/Houston/Central Florida CC) and sophomore Olivia Mesner (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River HS) finished with six kills and 13 digs and 14 kills and five blocks, respectively. Sophomore Whitney Masters (Muncie, Ind./Wapahani HS) tallied 13 digs and five assists, while the setting duo of sophomore Gigi Meyer (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) and junior Courtney Greenberg (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Juniata College) racked up 50 assists and 21 digs combined.

FGCU won the team dig battle 61-42 and outhit the Hatters .272 to .154. The Eagles hit .250 or better in every game except for the third set where they registered a .105 hitting percentage and lost 25-20.

The Green and Blue will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 30 when they host the Dolphins of Jacksonville in conference action. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
