Eagles Sweep Jacksonville to Lock Up First Round Bye in A-Sun Tourney

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The first place Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team won its 15th consecutive match (14th straight Atlantic Sun Conference match) on Tuesday night, sweeping Jacksonville 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-18) to secure a top two seed in the 2012 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament.

“I'm proud of the way we came out and took care of business tonight,” said head coach Dave Nichols. “We went down big in the second set, but showed a lot of poise to battle back. Locking up a top two seed in the conference tournament is a big accomplishment and I can't be more proud of this group.”

The Eagles, who have only lost nine sets in conference play this season and are off to the best start to A-Sun play in program history, improved to 19-7 overall (14-0 A-Sun), while the Dolphins fell to 7-21 overall (5-10 A-Sun). The Eagles' 15-match winning streak is now the longest streak in the program's Division I history and is also the third longest streak in the FGCU record books. The 2006 edition of the Eagles hold the FGCU record after reeling off 27 in a row from Sept. 1 to Nov. 10.

Sophomore Olivia Mesner (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River HS) finished with a match-high 11 kills and seven blocks.  Junior Kaitlin Holm (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Marshall) chipped in with 11 kills and five blocks, while the setting duo of sophomore Gigi Meyer (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) and junior Courtney Greenberg (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Juniata College) racked up 27 assists and 15 digs combined.

FGCU won the team dig battle 38-32 and outhit the Dolphins .330 to .125. The Eagles hit .333 or better in every game except for the first set where they registered a .111 hitting percentage and won 25-16.
