Chelsea and Kelsey Lead Eagles Past Camels, 76-43

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Chelsea Lyles and Kelsey Jacobson each scored a game high 16 points as the Florida Gulf Coast University women's basketball team defeated the Camels of Campbell University Saturday, 76-43, in front of a crowd of 1,753 at Alico Arena.

With the win the Eagles improve to 19-4 overall and 14-1 in the A-Sun, while the Camels drop to 13-9 overall and 8-6 in conference play. The Blue and Green also extended their home winning streak to 22 games, the fifth-longest active streak in Division I.

Chelsea Lyles' (Colorado Springs, Col.) hot shooting led to an early 16-3 run to start the first five minutes of the game. Lyles connected for the Eagles first seven points of the contest, hitting a pair of two's and draining a 3-pointer to give FGCU the early 7-3 lead just two minutes into the first half. The early run also included buckets by Shannon Murphy (Brighton, Mich.), Eglah Griffin (Fort Myers, Fla.) and a free throw by Adrianne McNally (Howell, Mich.).

Midway through the first half, a Lyles' 3-pointer sparked another 16-2 run to extend FGCU's lead to 40-15 at the 3:12 mark. Murphy led the Eagles during the run, connecting on two 3-pointers.

Campbell added four more points in the first half as FGCU went into the locker room with a commanding 40-19 lead.

The Eagle defense only allowed the Camels to score back-to-back field goals once in the first half, forcing 14 Campbell turnovers. Lyles led all scorers in the first half, shooting 5-of-6 from the field and 3-of-4 from behind the arc. Murphy chipped in eight points and five assists in the first frame.

FGCU started the second half with a 19-0 run, with Brittany Brown (Flint, Mich.) scoring 10 points in three minutes including four straight from the field, and a pair of 3-pointers. Campbell scored their first bucket of the second half at the 12:26 mark

Kelsey Jacobson (Barnesville, Minn.) added the Eagles final 10 points of the night as FGCU went on to win their seventh straight A-Sun contest, 76-43.

Lauren Yesh led the Camels with nine points and five rebounds.

Coach Smesko and the Eagles look to pick-up the program's 200th win on the road in Jacksonville, Fla. as they take on the Dolphins of Jacksonville University Thursday, Feb. 11 at 5:00 p.m. FGCU then travels to the University of North Florida on Saturday, Feb. 13 with tip-off set for 4:30 p.m.

The Eagles land back at home in Alico Arena Thursday, February 18, for another Eagle hoops doubleheader. The women will take on Lipscomb at 5:15 p.m., with the men's game set to begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of the women's.
