Eagles Defeat Jacksonville and Secure Program's 200th Victory

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University women's basketball team used a 15-7 run over the final 7:20 in the second half to pick up a 63-55 A-Sun victory over Jacksonville Thursday night at Veterans Memorial Arena. With the win, Head Coach Karl Smesko and the Eagles picked-up the program's 200th win.

The Eagles (20-4, 15-1 A-Sun) trailed 29-25 at the half, before holding the Dolphins (7-16, 6-9 A-Sun) to just 28.1-percent (9-of-32) from the field over the final 20 minutes.

Sophomore guard Eglah Griffin (Fort Myers, Fla.) scored a game-high 15 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field and 2-of-3 from behind the arc. Junior guard Shannon Murphy (Brighton, Mich.) added 14 points and a game-high five assists. Senior forward Chelsea Lyles (Colorado Springs, Col.) chipped in with 12 points, four assists, and three boards.

With this win the Eagles retain sole possession of first place in the Atlantic Sun, leading East Tennessee State by a game and a half.

FGCU shot 10-of-33 (30.3-percent) from the field in the first half, compared to JU's 13-of-26 (50-percent).

The Eagles field goal percentage drastically changed in the second half as Griffin scored eight points to highlight FGCU's 15-7 run.

The Blue and Green outscored Jacksonville 38-26 in the second half after trailing by four points at halftime. The Eagles were 5-for-10 (50-percent) from beyond the 3-point arc in the game's final 20 minutes, while the Dolphins shot 3-for-8 (37.5-percent). For the contest the Blue and Green shot 35-percent (21-of-60) from the field, compared to Jacksonville's 37.9-percent (22-of-58).

The Eagles are back in action this Saturday when they face the Ospreys of the University of North Florida (7-16, 4-10 A-Sun). Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at UNF Arena.

Note: Coach Smesko and the FGCU women's basketball program now have an all-time record of 200-38 (.840) in eight seasons.
