Career Performances Lead Eagles to 3-0 Sweep of USC Upstate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Junior Holly Youngquist (Estero, Fla./Evangelical Christian) and freshman Camil Dominguez (Santo Domingo, D.R./Santa Teresita) recorded double doubles as the FGCU volleyball squad swept USC Upstate 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 26-24) Friday night to pick up their second A-Sun Conference victory of the season.

FGCU (5-15, 2-4 A-Sun) outhit the Spartans (9-15, 1-6 A-Sun) .216-.118 and used a match-high 63 digs to frustrate the Upstate offense.

Youngquist, who played outside hitter for the first time in her collegiate career, finished the match with her first career double double by registering 10 kills and 10 digs. Dominguez's double double (40 assists and 11 digs) was her fifth of the season. Senior Chelsea Lyles (Colorado Springs, Col./Harrison HS/Western Nebraska CC) finished the match with nine kills, one block assist and a .471 hitting percentage. Senior Adrianne McNally (Howell, Mich./Pinckney HS) recorded eight kills and a career-high .636 hitting percentage. Sophomore Brittany Muse (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto County HS) added eight kills and four block assists, while senior Alexa Napoleon (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier/Jacksonville) racked up a career-high 16 digs.

In the opening set, the Eagles jumped out to a quick 16-9 lead after a kill from senior Caitlin Shawver (Lauderdale by the Sea, Fla./Northeast HS/Barry). After a kill from Upstate's Morgan Thomas made the score 16-10, the Eagles used a 9-2 run, highlighted by great serving from Dominguez and kills from Lyles, McNally and Shawver, to grab game one (25-12) and a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Eagles jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the second stanza, but the Spartans scored four consecutive points to cut the FGCU lead to three (10-7). After exchanging points to make the score 15-13, the Blue and Green used a 7-3 run to grab a 22-16 lead. The Eagles would hold off USC Upstate to win game two (25-18) and take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.

The Spartans shot out to a 15-11 lead in the third set, forcing the Eagles to burn a timeout. The Blue and Green used a 10-6 run, capped by a pair of Youngquist kills, to draw the set even (21-21). After an attack error by the Eagles gave Upstate a 22-21 lead, FGCU scored three consecutive points to go ahead 24-22. Kills by the Spartans Katie Downey and Cori Harris made the score 24-24. Back-to-back kills from Lyles gave the Eagles the set (26-24) and their second conference victory of the 2010 campaign.

The Eagles will be back on the court on Saturday, Oct. 30 at ETSU. Match time is set for 2 p.m. in Johnson City, Tenn.

FGCU's next home tilt will be November 5 when they host the Bisons of Lipscomb at Alico Arena at 7 p.m.
