Eagles Tripped Up at ETSU, 3-0

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Senior Chelsea Lyles (Colorado Springs, Col./Harrison HS/Western Nebraska CC) recorded a team-high eight kills as the FGCU volleyball squad was swept by ETSU 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 27-25) on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss the Eagles fall to 5-16 overall (2-5 A-Sun), while the Bucs improve to 23-6 overall (6-1 A-Sun) on the season.

Lyles finished the match with eight kills, two digs, two block assists and a .250 hitting percentage. Senior Caitlin Shawver (Lauderdale by the Sea, Fla./Northeast HS/Barry) recorded six kills and sophomore Lindsey Childs (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./South Plantation HS) chipped in with five. Junior Holly Youngquist (Estero, Fla./Evangelical Christian) led the team with 10 digs, while freshman setter Camil Dominguez (Santo Domingo, D.R./Santa Teresita) recorded 24 assists.

After honoring their seniors in 'Senior Day' presentations, the Bucs jumped out to a quick 7-4 advantage. ETSU then extended their lead to 10-5 thanks to a service ace and a pair of kills, forcing the Eagles to call a timeout. The Bucs controlled the rest of the set and went on to pick up the 25-15 victory. ETSU hit .333 in the set, while limiting the Blue and Green to just a .094 attack percentage.

In the second set, both teams battled back and forth until an ETSU kill put the Bucs in front 5-4. FGCU tied the score at 12 following an attack error by the Bucs. With the score tied, ETSU's Alysa Long recorded a kill to give the Bucs the lead for good as they went on to win the set 25-21 and go ahead 2-0 in the match.

The Eagles jumped out to a quick 6-2 advantage in the third set following a kill from senior Emma Racila (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot/College of Charleston). ETSU then used an 8-4 run to tie the match at 10 apiece. FGCU responded with a 5-2 run to grab a 14-11 lead. With the Eagles leading 18-15, ETSU got back-to-back kills from Lauren Baufield and Long, which forced the Eagles to burn a timeout (18-17). FGCU continued their solid play to stay in front and eventually reached set point at 24-22 following a kill from Lyles. Facing game-point, the Bucs got a pair to draw the match even at 24. The Blue and Green reached set point again after another Lyles kill, but a ball handling error evened the set for the seventh time (25-25). With the score all square at 25, the Bucs got consecutive points to win game three (27-25) and the match (3-0).

FGCU will return home on November 5 when they host the reigning A-Sun Champs Lipscomb in Alico Arena at 7 p.m.
