Fort Myers, Fla. - With a goal and an assist, sophomore Amber McCall helped led the FGCU women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory against Gardner-Webb Saturday afternoon at the FGCU Soccer Complex. The Eagles improve to 7-4 (3-1 A-Sun), and the Bulldogs fall to 4-7 (2-2 A-Sun).
The Eagles struck early in the first half when Amber McCall (Fort Myers, Fla.) sent her service from the left side across the box to freshman Michelle Kuhnen (Eau Claire, Wis.) who one timed it for the goal to give FGCU the 1-0 lead.
The Eagles kept the pressure on and had a chance to build on their lead when senior Jessica Zabel (Lake Mary, Fla.) dribbled around defenders and got a shot off that was deflected over the net by Bulldogs' goalie Sarah Wyszynski (Wilbraham, Mass.) who made a great save.
FGCU had yet another chance in the first half when freshman Kelli Haemmelmann (St. Petersburg, Fla.) sent her shot from 40 yards out just over the net at 21:34.
Wyszynski made another great save for the bulldogs at the beginning of the second half when McCall put a good shot on goal off a free kick that continued to build momentum for the Eagles.
The Eagles put the game away at 24:04 when freshman Kelly Sheriff (Coral Springs, Fla.) sent her corner kick to the left post where McCall was waiting to head it into the back of the net to put FGCU up for good. “That was big time,” Head Coach Jim Blankenship said, “It was the difference in the game.”
With the 2-0 win, the Eagles move to 7-4 and 3-1 in A-Sun Conference play. “I'm pleased with where we're at,” added Coach Blankenship.
Freshman Kirsi Keenan (Boca Raton, Fla.) recorded her second consecutive shutout and third in four games.
The FGCU women's soccer team is back in action on Friday October 12th as they host against Jacksonville at 5:00 P.M. at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
