Women's Soccer Shuts Out Campbell, 2-0

Fort Myers, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University women's soccer team earned their second conference victory with a 2-0 win over Campbell on Friday morning at the FGCU Soccer Complex. With the win, the Eagles improve to 6-4 (2-1 A-Sun) while the Camels fall to 1-6-1 (0-2-1 A-Sun).

 

In the 11th minute, sophomore Amber McCall (Fort Myers, Fla.) sent a great shot from the top of the box that was saved by Camels goalkeeper Annamarie Ditommaso. The Eagles would score first in the 22nd minute after freshman Lindsay Haw (Palm City, Fla.) scored her eighth goal of the season. Freshman Jessica Zabel (Lake Mary, Fla.) sent a pass from midfield to Lindsay Haw, Haw dribbled down the left wing passed a defender and found the back of the net to put the Eagles up 1-0. The Eagles would get another opportunity in the 26th minute, as freshman Kelly Sheriff (Coral Springs, Fla.) sent a header that just missed wide right of the net. The score would hold until halftime, as the Eagles outshot the Camels 10-1 in the first half.

In the second period, freshman Anna Jokuty (Calgary, Canada) added her first collegiate goal in the 54th minute. Jokuty's first goal came after a corner kick from freshman Michelle Kuhnen (Eau Claire, Wis.) found junior Kelli Haemmelmann (St. Petersburg, Fla.) who sent it to Jokuty, Jokuty cut inside to the top of box and hit the shot to put the Eagles 2-0.

FGCU starting keeper Kirsi Keenan (Boca Raton, Fla.) recorded one save while registering her second win of the season. FGCU outshot Campbell 19-3. FGCU had six corner kicks while Campbell earned two. The Camels committed 12 fouls while the Eagles committed only four fouls.

“It was a good win for us this morning, I was very impressed with our performance,” said Head Coach Jim Blakenship. “We bounced back after last night and came out and did what we had to do, we keep pressure on them all game and we came out on top.”

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday at 2:00pm when they host Gardner-Webb at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
