Eagles Move to 15-2 with 3-1 Win Over UNF

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. '" The 14th ranked Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team extended their winning streak to 13 straight matches with a 3-1 win over North Florida on Saturday afternoon. FGCU improves to 15-2 while UNF falls to 9-11. In the first game, FGCU fell behind early but used a 7-0 run to take a 10-7 lead. The Eagles built a lead of as many as five points, but UNF trimmed the lead to 20-19 before FGCU scored five straight to take a six point lead. UNF battled back to take a 27-26 lead before four straight points by the Eagles handed them game one 30-27. The Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back steadily pulling away throughout the game. FGCU racked up 16 kills in the game while limiting the Ospreys to just 10 kills. The Eagles took game two 30-19. Down early in the third game, UNF went on a 10-3 run to take an 11-7 lead. The Ospreys built a 23-14 lead before a 5-0 FGCU run cut the lead to 23-19. FGCU cut the lead to 24-21 but could never get closer than three the rest of the game. UNF took game three 30-25 to end the Eagles 38 game winning streak. The Eagles responded by opening up a 5-2 lead. The Ospreys were able to battle back and tie the score on four occasions, the last time was at 17 apiece. The Eagles then went on a 4-0 run to regain control momentarily. The Ospreys battled back to tie the score on three occasions, but never take the lead. The Eagles scored the final two points to win 30-28. Four Ospreys recorded double figures in kills, led by Emily Kohler'™s 18. Kohler added 12 digs for the Ospreys. Ericka Fonseca led four Eagles in double figures with 19 kills. Brooke Younquist also reached double figures in kills while adding a career-high 32 digs. Cara Ziegler and Heather Van Olst were the other Eagles to reach double figures in kills with 15 and 14 respectively. The Eagles return home on Tuesday to face Nova Southeastern at 7:00 pm at Alico Arena.
