Volleyball Runs Winning Streak to 14 Matches

FORT MYERS, Fla. '" The 13th ranked Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team extended their winning streak to 14 matches with a 3-0 (30-13, 30-15, 30-17) sweep of Nova Southeastern. The Eagles hit a school record .402 in the match to improve to 16-2, while Nova Southeastern falls to 6-14. FGCU wasted no time securing an insurmountable lead, jumping to an 8-0 lead. The Eagles forced five errors in the opening moments, recording four blocks as well. After the 8-0 run, the Eagles strung together nine straight points, including three straight aces by Heather Van Olst. FGCU coasted to a 30-13 win in the first game. The Eagles nearly duplicated their game one start in the second game, racing ahead 7-0. This time, Ericka Fonseca led the outburst with a pair of kills. The Eagles continued to build on the lead and coasted to a 30-15 win in the second game. The third game saw the Eagles get out to a 5-0 lead behind a pair of service aces by Thais Alessandra de Franca. Midway through the match, Nova Southeastern put together a 6-2 run to trim the Eagles lead to 20-12, however, the Eagles would close the match with five straight points, securing game three 30-17. The Eagles held Nova Southeastern to a (.-056) hitting percentage. Melinda Gorman led the Sharks with seven kills while Karla Ortiz added six. Brooke Youngquist tallied 16 kills, hiting .517 in the match to pace the Eagles. Ericka Fonseca added 10 kills and six blocks for FGCU. Thais Alessandra de Franca hit .500 in the match while recording six kills and recording three aces. The Eagles will be in action again on Friday night when they travel to Lakeland, Fla., to face third ranked Florida Southern at 7:00 pm in a critical South Region match-up.
