Eagle Volleyball Wins 12th Straight Match

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. '" The 14th ranked Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team extended their winning streak to 12 straight with a 3-0 win over Jacksonville. The Eagles are now 14-2 and have swept 11 straight opponents while the Dolphins fall to 7-9. In the first game, FGCU fell behind early but used a 7-0 run to take a 10-7 lead. JU rallied to tie the score at 17 all and from that point the two teams traded leads several times. FGCU scored three straight to take a 29-27 lead to force a JU timeout. The Eagles then received an Ericka Fonseca, her fourth of the game, to win the first game 30-27. Game two went back and forth with both teams taking various leads through out. Neither team had a lead greater than three points. FGCU fell behind 23-20 and went on a 6-0 run to take a 26-23 lead. The Eagles were able to maintain a lead from that point and took game two with an identical 30-27 score. The Eagles held JU to six kills while pounding home 20 in the second game. The Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third game. JU would cut the lead to two on several occasions, but a 9-2 FGCU run put the Eagles in command of the third game. FGCU built a commanding 25-13 lead and was never seriously threatened. The Eagles maintained their double digit lead and wound up winning the third game 30-18. The Eagles limited the Dolphins to a .145 hitting percentage while hitting .302, no JU player recorded double figures in kills. Brooke Youngquist led the Eagles with 17 kills while Ericka Fonseca recorded her 600th career kill in the match. Fonseca finished with 11 in the match while Heather Van Olst also added 11 kills. The Eagles look to run their winning streak to 13 when they face UNF tomorrow at 1:00 pm in Swisher Gym. Last season, UNF ended FGCU'™s school record 16-match winning streak.
