FGCU Downs Lynn in Four Games

FORT MYERS, Fla. '" The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team overcame a slow start to down Lynn 3-1 (29-31, 30-14, 30-18, 30-16) in Alico Arena. Lynn jumped out to a 12-3 lead after the Eagles committed six hitting errors in the early stages. FGCU began to steadily chip away at Lynn'™s lead and eventually knotted the game at 23 apiece. From that point, six ties ensued before the Knights would put game one away from a kill by Megan Bender and an ace by Melissa Roberts. FGCU came out in game two on fire, jumping to a 10-1 lead, the serving of Patricia Gomes da Silva ignited the run as she had four aces over that span. The Eagles would continue to build on their lead and coast to a 30-14 game two win. The early stages of game three featured six ties before the Eagles began to distance themselves. Up 14-11, the Eagles then went on an 8-0 run to take a commanding 23-11 lead. Cara Ziegler had a pair of kills and Ericka Fonseca added a pair of aces in the run. FGCU would eventually take game three 30-18. Game four was tight early, with the Eagles leading 11-9, Cheyenne Jenks sparked another 8-0 run with three kills to take 19-9 lead. From there, six hitting errors by Lynn contributed to a 30-16 win in the decisive game. Larissa Witherspoon led the Knights with 12 kills and 21 digs in the match. Dierdre Knobeloch and Melissa Roberts each recorded eight kills while Christie Schade added 19 digs in the match. Ericka Fonseca led the Eagles with 18 kills in the match and also added three aces. Cheyenne Jenks reached double figures in kills for the first time in her career, with 10, while hitting .526 in the match. Brooke Youngquist (15 kills, 12 digs) and Patricia Gomes da Silva (14 kills, 12 digs) each recorded double-doubles for FGCU. Whitney Hendry also added 22 digs for the Eagles. The Eagles will return to action on Sunday at 4:00 pm when they travel to Winter Park, Fla., to face Rollins in the Alfond Sports Arena.
