Volleyball Runs Winning Streak to 21

MELBOURNE, Fla. '" The 10th ranked Florida Gulf Coast University extended the nations fourth longest winning streak to 21 consecutive matches. FGCU improved to 23-2 with a 3-0 (30-17, 30-20, 30-19) sweep over Florida Tech (2-24). The Eagles drew the first point with a kill by Ericka Fonseca. After a pair of side outs, FGCU went on a 4-0 run to take a 6-2 lead. The Eagles continued to build on their lead, a 6-0 run gave the Eagles a 12-3 lead. Brooke Youngquist recorded four kills in the 6-0 outburst. Youngquist would lead the Eagles to a 30-17 win in the opening game with eight kills, while FGCU hit .381 as a team in the game. Game two saw the Eagles take the early lead again before a pair of points by the Panthers. After the teams exchanged 3-0 runs, FGCU took a10-5 lead and would not trail again in the game. Florida Tech would cut the lead to six at 23-17, but the Eagles would go on to take game two 30-20. The Eagles again scored first in game three and would build an early 4-1 lead. From there, Florida Tech would rally to take a 6-5 lead, but FGCU would respond by scoring the next three points. The Eagles could not pull away from Florida Tech who took 15-9 lead with a 9-2 run before forcing a FGCU timeout. FIT would maintain a six point lead until a 13-0 FGCU run gave the Eagles a lead 25-18 they would not relinquish. FGCU would go on to take game three 30-19. Jenny McCoy led Florida Tech with nine kills in the match while Leigh Ann Brown added seven kills. Melissa Reinders had a match-high 20 digs. Megan Konopnicki chipped in six kills while Rachael Joakim recorded five kills for the Panthers. Brooke Youngquist recorded 16 kills in the match as Ericka Fonseca put down 11 kills for the Eagles. Whitney Hendry led the defensive effort with 16 digs. Chandra Ginest let the offense to a .276 hitting percentage as she dished out 30 assists. FGCU will return home on Saturday night when they host Saint Xavier in Alico Arena at 7:00 pm.
