Volleyball Gets Past USC-Aiken for 17th Straight Win

AIKEN, S.C. '" The 10th ranked Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball survived a scare from South Carolina Aiken on Thursday night. With the 3-1 (22-30, 34-32, 32-30, 30-28) win, FGCU extended their winning streak to a school record 17 matches. FGUC now stands at 19-2 while USC-Aiken falls to 21-4. Aiken, who came into the match ranked sixth in the south region and on a six-match winning streak, surprised the Eagles in game one with a 30-22 win in the opening game. The pacers recorded 20 kills in game one hitting .472 FGCU tried to jump on the Pacers early in game two, but a scrappy USC-Aiken team would not go away. FGCU was able to outlast USC-Aiken and take game two 34-32. FGCU got off to an early lead in the third game only to see the Pacers rally again. After falling behind early, the Pacers were able to knot the score eight times, with the last tie coming at 30 all before FGCU took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 32-30 game two win. The Eagles were able to build a 17-12 lead in game four, but the Pacers again battled back to tie the score. Aiken would eventually fall 30-28. FGCU hit a season low .124 for the game and was out-blocked for just the fourth time this season. Aiken recorded 65 kills while limiting FGCU to 61. The Eagles were able to record nine aces, the third highest total this season. Ericka Fonseca and Brooke Youngquist recorded 17 kills each for the Eagles while Patricia Gomes da Silva added 11 kills for FGCU. Youngquist added 15 digs for the Eagles. Whitney Hendry led the Eagles with 17 digs on the evening. Chandra Ginest picked up four aces and added three blocks while dishing out 55 assists. The Eagles will be in action again tomorrow afternoon when they face Catawba at 5:00 pm on the first day of the Blue Hose Tournament hosted by Presbyterian.
