Eagles Win Two Matches At Eckerd College Tournament

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. '" The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team started out the season with a pair of shutout wins in the Eckerd College Tournament on Friday. FGCU (2-0) defeated New York Institute of Technology 3-0 before blanking CW Post of Long Island 3-0. In match one, the Eagles rolled past NYIT 30-14, 30-15 and 30-17. Junior middle hitter Ericka Fonseca (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), a transfer from Miami Dade Community College, made her Eagles debut with a team-high 18 kills. Sophomore outside hitter Brooke Youngquist (Fort Myers, Fla.) put down 12 kills for the Eagles to go along with eight digs. Leading the offense was freshman setter Ciara Sandoval (Fort Myers, Fla.), who collected an astonishing 49 assists in her collegiate debut. The defensive leader was sophomore libero Whitney Hendry (Fort Myers, Fla.) who had 15 digs against NYIT. In the second match of the day, FGCU rolled past C.W. Post of Long Island in three games, 30-10, 30-24 and 31-29. Fonseca again led the way with 18 kills and a .762 hitting percentage. In the two matches, Fonseca posted an astounding .666 hitting percentage. Senior outside hitter Devon Watts (Somerville, Texas) shot down 15 kills with a .538 hitting percentage and five digs. Junior setter Laura Manovill (Dunedin, Fla.), who led the team in assists a year ago, keyed the offense with 28 assists. Once again Hendry, who led the team with 5.02 digs per game a year ago, led the team with 18 digs '" a 6.0 average '" in the match. The Eagles will take on 2004 NCAA regional finalist Dowling College in the home opener at Alico Arena on Monday night at 7 p.m.
