FORT MYERS, Fla. '" Florida Gulf Coast University improved to 5-0 with a convincing 80-40 win Friday night over Kentucky State in Division II South Region women'™s basketball action at Alico Arena. Senior guard Candy Myers led four Eagles in double figures with a game-high 18 points to move seven points shy of moving into second on the school'™s all-time scoring record. Junior forward Katie Schrader had 15 points and a team-high seven rebounds while freshmen guards Candance Carreras and Princess Stewart scored 10 apiece. Kentucky State (1-1) actually held the lead 8-7 with 11:33 remaining in the first half before FGCU was able to overcome missing its first seven three-point field goals. Keyed by eight points from Schrader, the Eagles went on a 22-3 run over the next seven minutes to take a 29-11 lead. FGCU utilized strong man-to-man pressure defense, forcing 17 Thorobrettes turnovers in the first 20 minutes. The Eagles held a 38-16 lead at the break. FGCU shot 43.6% from the floor in the final half, including 5-of-9 from three-point territory to top the 80 point mark for the fourth time this season. FGCU has held the opposition to 40 points or less in each of the last three games. Senior guard Nakia Dunn led Kentucky State with 16 points. The Thorobrettes will play North Alabama tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. at Alico Arena. FGCU closes out its season-opening six-game home stand when it hosts North Alabama on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
