FGCU Volleyball Defeats South Carolina Aiken

AIKEN, S.C. '" The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team defeated yet another regionally ranked team, the University of South Carolina - Aiken 3-1. The Pacers took the first game 30-22, but the Eagles rallied back and won the next three games 30-25, 30-23, 30-20. This was the first ever meeting between the two teams and the Pacers standing at (14-11) are ranked 10th in the region. Overall against the Pacers, the Eagles hit .250 as a team and collected 14 blocks. FGCU extends their winning streak to a school-record 14 matches. Junior Erika Fonseca (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) led the Eagles in kills with 20 and a .545 hitting percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Heather Van Olst a, (Loxahatchee,, FL) added 15 kills with a .353 hitting percentage with a dig and a block. Junior middle Melissa Duffield (Cedar Rapids, IA) posted nine kills and four blocks with a .400 hitting percentage. Junior setter Laura Manovill (Dunedin, FL) led the Eagles in assists with 23 while freshman setter Ciara Sandoval (Fort Myers, FL) collected 18 assists. Sophomore libero Whitney Hendry (Fort Myers, FL) led in digs collecting 13. Hendry is also currently fifth in digs per game in the national NCAA Division II statistics polling. In game two, three-straight kills fueled a 6-0 run and pushed the Eagles out in front 15-7. Trailing 26-15, USC Aiken got two kills each from Deardorff, Seidle, and Gerolstein to score 10 of the next 13 points and pull within 29-25, but Fonseca'™s kill put the game away 30-25. A 6-1 spurt and a 5-0 run capped by a Manovill ace again put FGCU out in front by a commanding 25-14 margin as they closed out the game 30-23. Game four featured tight play through the midway point of the game with eight ties, the last coming at 16-16. But the Eagles outscored the Pacers 14-4 the rest of the way to close out the match 30-20. FGCU hit .349 in game four compared to .000 for USCA. FGCU, still ranked No. 2 in the NCAA South Region, improve to 23-2 overall.
