Valdosta, GA --- Natasha Liggins hit a jumper with 16 seconds remaining to lift West Georgia to a 54-53 win over Florida Gulf Coast University in women's basketball action at Valdosta State University on Friday afternoon.
After Liggins shot gave the Braves their first lead since early in the second half, FGCU had several opportunities to win the game in the final seconds.
Coming out of a timeout, junior guard
Megan Jones missed a three-pointer with four seconds remaining. Junior guard
Candy Myers grabbed the offensive rebound but missed the put back with one second remaining on the clock. Junior fForward
Jennifer Santana grabbed the rebound for FGCU as time expired.
The Braves held the Eagles to just 38% shooting from the field, including 5 of 22 from the three-point line. West Georgia hit 45.7% of its shots in the game. The Eagles were hurt by 22 turnovers in the game, though they held a 36-22 advantage in rebounds.
Santana led FGCU (4-3) with 12 points and six rebounds while senior forward
Andrea Clarke added 11 points.
Tai Ellis led the Braves (4-2) with a game-high 18 points.
FGCU will play Valdosta State tomorrow evening at 6 p.m.
