Eagles win again, defeat St. Francis 67-37

FORT MYERS, Fla. --- For three weeks, Florida Gulf Coast University junior center Robyn Swain worked to earn a starting position.

The way Swain played during the Eagles' 67-37 victory over St. Francis-Joliet (Ill.) Saturday night at Alico Arena, she won't be giving it up anytime soon.

Swain controlled the lane, grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds and blocking five Lady Saint shots as the Eagles remained perfect on the season, improving to 7-0.

"She has made the most of her opportunities," FGCU head coach Karl Smesko said of Swain, who added six points. "She's been making progress over the last few weeks and she was building to this."

The Eagles held St. Francis (8-3) to 24 percent shooting from the floor and held a 40-31 edge on the boards.

Senior forward Trish Fleming led all scorers with 26 points, scoring in a variety of ways.

Fleming knocked down 3-of-6 3-point attempts and looked just as comfortable in the lane, using several low post moves to work herself free for shots.

Fleming got plenty of help from her teammates. Five Eagle players scored at least six points, including freshman point guard Megan Jones, who got the Eagles started with a pair of 3-pointers in the game's opening moments.

As has been their custom, the Eagles used an extended run to break the game open early.

Leading 10-5 with 14 minutes to play in the first half, FGCU went on a 13-0 run fueled by exceptional defensive pressure.

The Eagles held St. Francis without a basket for five minutes, and when the Saints managed to put two good possessions together to cut it to 23-10, FGCU responded with 3-pointers on three successive possessions.

The Eagles begin a four-game road trip Tuesday at Indiana University-South Bend.
