Raina Harmon, the third coach in program history, joined the women’s basketball program as head coach in April 2025.
Harmon, in her first season as head coach, guided the Eagles to a 16-16 overall record and an 11-7 mark in the ASUN before earning a WNIT appearance. Harmon's first career coaching win came against Ave Maria on November 13th, and she wasted no time establishing the her identity for the program, facing the second-toughest nonconference strength of schedule in the country, highlighted by a memorable upset over Stanford in Las Vegas. The Eagles broke single-game program records in points (120), field goals made (49), and assists (34) while also recording the largest margin of victory in an ASUN Tournament game at 66 points. FGCU also drew a program record 3,527 fans for the home game against South Carolina. On the defensive end, the Eagles ranked first in the ASUN and 90th nationally in field goal percentage, fourth in the ASUN and 41st nationally in field goal percentage defense, third in the ASUN and 48th nationally in scoring defense, and second in the ASUN and 10th nationally in three-point percentage defense. Sinai Douglas earned All-ASUN Third Team honors and ranked fourth in the ASUN in both assists per game and assist-to-turnover ratio, while Nay Staton ranked third in the ASUN in free throw percentage. Karina Gordon and Jordan Campbell were both named to the ASUN All-Academic Team.
Previously, she served for eight years as assistant coach at the University of Iowa, where she cultivated a culture of excellence with a 208-63 record and a combined five Big Ten Conference titles. Harmon solidified the team’s winning pedigree and cemented its reputation as a women’s basketball powerhouse.
Her achievements include coaching and developing several WNBA draft picks, notably Caitlin Clark, the No. 1 overall pick and 2024 Rookie of the Year. Under her leadership, the Hawkeyes earned eight berths in the NCAA tournament and became the first team in conference history to compete for back-to-back National Championship titles.
Harmon helped Iowa reach the Round of 32 this year in Norman, Oklahoma, with a 23-11 record. It was the same place where 30-2 FGCU punched its 11th NCAA Tournament ticket.
Prior to Iowa, Harmon spent five years as assistant women’s basketball coach at Central Michigan University, where she helped the Chippewas punch their ticket to the NCAA Tournament in 2013. From 2010 to 2012, she served as director of women’s basketball operations at the University of Michigan.
Harmon earned a master’s degree in sports administration at Wayne State University in 2009 and a bachelor’s in sports studies from Central Michigan in 2004. She and her spouse, Charita Martin, have a son, Ja’Quez.
