Brandon Romans enters his sixth season as an assistant baseball coach for the Eagles in 2022-23.
Romans oversees the recruiting process while serving as the hitting coach and working with the position players.
In 2022, under Romans' tutelage, five position players for the Eagles were named All-ASUN - Alejandro Figueredo (1st), Joe Kinker (1st), Brian Ellis (2nd), Ian Farrow (2nd), and Harrison Povey (Freshman). In addition, Figueredo became just the sixth player in program history to be named an All-American while Povey was just the second to earn Freshman All-America status.
During his time at FGCU, Romans worked closely with the team's starting catcher Alex Brait, who became the first player in program history to be named to the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award Watch List. Brait, who ranks fourth all-time in runners caught stealing (26), led the league in hits during the 2019 season, a result of the work he put in with Romans. Though the 2020 season was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, redshirt-sophomore Brian Ellis had reached base safely in all 16 games, thanks to Romans' coaching.Â
The Cocoa, Fla., had eight years of collegiate coaching experience before arriving at FGCU, most recently serving as an assistant coach at Austin Peay in 2017. Romans has also served two stints at the University of Central Florida (2010-12, ’16) and three seasons at Jacksonville State (2013-15).
In eight years of coaching, Romans has helped account for 311 wins and has been to the NCAA Tournament on three occasions – twice with UCF (2011, ’12) and once with Jacksonville State (2014). Along with mentoring seven All-Americans and an equal number of Freshman All-Americans, Romans has helped four former players including Danny Winkler (Braves), Darnell Sweeney (Phillies), Ben Lively (Phillies) and Eric Skoglund (Royals) achieve their Major League dreams.
As an assistant coach at Austin Peay, Romans served as the Governors' recruiting coordinator, hitting coach and outfield coach. Under his tutelage, the team hit .287 and not only broke the school record with 84 home runs, but also ranked tied for sixth in the country in the category. The Governors recorded notable wins against N.C. State, Notre Dame, Mercer and Lipscomb in the regular season before advancing to the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Quarterfinals and eventually falling to Belmont.
Prior to his second stint at UCF in 2016 when he served as an assistant coach and was responsible for Knights hitters, catchers and outfielders, Romans earned his first assistant coaching position at Jacksonville State. In three seasons with the Gamecocks, he helped the program compile 98 overall wins, 55 OVC victories and win the 2014 OVC Tournament. Romans coached 2013 All-Americans Michael Bishop and Travis Stout as well as 2014 ABCA All-Region honoree Griff Gordon.
Romans began his coaching career at UCF, where he served as the volunteer assistant from 2010-12 and helped lead the Knights to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in his final two seasons. He was part of a 45-win season in 2012, which included the nation’s highest road winning percentage (16-3, .842), and helped D.J. Hicks earn his second of two straight All-American honors and a Dick Howser Trophy Semifinalist nod. With Romans on staff, the 2011 team led the conference in runs, home runs, slugging percentage and doubles and advanced to its first NCAA Tournament since 2004. In his debut season, Romans coached outfielders Chris Duffy (.447) and Shane Brown (.428) to a pair of All-American honors. Duffy not only won the league batting title and ranked fourth nationally in batting average during the season, but was also a NCBWA Dick Howser Trophy Semifinalist and Golden Spikes Award Finalist.
A 2009 graduate of UCF, Romans batted .314 during his three-year career with the Knights. In his final season, he hit .333 and led UCF with 14 home runs and 49 RBI. That performance saw Romans earn C-USA Second Team All-Conference honors as an outfielder. He was also selected to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List.
He and his wife, Emily, recently welcomed their newborn son, Landon, in Jan. 2021.Â
