TAMPA, Fla. – In a championship battle of two undefeated Eagles, it was
Nora Svensson who made history on Sunday. Svensson defeated teammate
June Bjork to claim the first singles top-flight championship at the Bedford Cup in FGCU history.
Svensson's 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) win claimed the title for the junior for Sweden. That now evens Svensson's record against Bjork at 1-1 following their battle at the Audi Danderyd Open over the summer.
Sunday's title match wrapped up a weekend full of action for the Eagles, one in which FGCU went undefeated against Florida State (2-0), North Florida (3-0) and South Florida (2-0) in singles action. The Green & Blue posted a 15-8 record in singles over the tournament with a 5-4 mark in doubles.
Anjali Kotecha was named the Sportsmanship Award winner.
Svensson started the weekend with a straight-set win over UCF's Jade Psonka, battled through a tiebreaker win over FAU's Panna Bartha and advanced to the championship match with a straight-set win over FIU's Sofia Fernadez Figueras.
Bjork's loss to her teammate was her only singles loss of the weekend. Her tournament path began with a straight-set wins over Stetson's Yuki Mizugichi in the round of 16 and over USF's Paulina Montiel in the quarterfinals. Saturday afternoon, she outlasted North Florida's Gabby Goyins in the semifinals, 6-7 (2-7), 6-2, 10-8.
In other consolation matches on Sunday,
Anjali Kotecha was granted a win over Florida State's Laura Putz by default, keeping the Eagles undefeated against the Seminoles.
Sabrina Jaramillo fell in a close battle with Psonka, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1), while
Maria Vargas dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to UCF's Olivia Bergler.
FGCU returns to action on Oct. 8 when the Eagles head to Coral Gables for the ITA Regional Championships.
