JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville (32-19) used a four-run second inning to prevail over Florida Gulf Coast (21-32), 6-2, in the second round of the ASUN Championship on Wednesday.
Tatum McCool and Jaida Thomas each hit RBI doubles for the Dolphins in the second. Emma Mansfield and Reese Wells also singled and scored, and Sarah Beth Brake hit a sacrifice fly that scored Thomas and gave JU a 4-1 lead it wouldn't relinquish.
Jacksonville added its fifth run in the third inning on a solo shot from Lindsey Chadwick, and scratched the sixth run across on their third RBI double of the day in the sixth inning from Brake.
Nikki Gibson gave FGCU an early lead with a second inning long ball, her second of the season and third career home run.
Olivia Black continued her push in the ASUN record books, stealing her 102nd career base later in the second inning to move to a three-way tie for fourth all-time in conference history with Stetson's Sabrina Isley and Jacksonville's Kayla Ouellet.
The Eagles had opportunities throughout, outhitting Jacksonville 10-7 in the loss, but went just 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position. FGCU left eight runners on base and stranded a runner in every inning except for the third.Â
Next, the Eagles will return for an elimination game against the loser of North Florida and North Alabama on Wednesday evening, with the time TBD.
