FGCU Takes on Stetson as ASUN Tournament Heats Up

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University women's basketball team (16-14, 11-7 ASUN) continues its postseason run on Thursday afternoon, facing No. 4 seed Stetson in the ASUN Tournament Quarterfinals at 2:30 p.m. from VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla. The No. 5 seed Eagles advanced after a dominant first-round performance against Bellarmine and now look to move one step closer to another championship as they pursue their 13th ASUN Tournament title and 10th consecutive crown.

Thursday's matchup marks the 46th all-time meeting between the Eagles and Hatters, with FGCU holding a commanding 39-6 advantage in the series. It will also be the eighth meeting between the two programs in ASUN Tournament play. The most recent matchup came just six days ago on Feb. 27 in Fort Myers, where FGCU secured a 67-55 victory over Stetson. In that contest, Sinai Douglas led the Eagles with 16 points while adding three rebounds and two assists. Nay Staton followed with 15 points and five rebounds, while Eve Alexander contributed 10 points, five rebounds, and three steals off the bench. Jordan Campbell filled the stat sheet with seven points, eight rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a block, and Anna Mortag added eight points on two three-pointers with four rebounds and two assists. Cerina Rolle also chipped in four points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals in the win.

FGCU enters the quarterfinal after a historic 94-28 victory over Bellarmine in the opening round on Tuesday. The Eagles seized control early and never let up, building a 23-11 lead after the first quarter and extending the margin to 52-18 at halftime. Alexander led FGCU with 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting while adding nine rebounds, and Mortag recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Jalei Pillow also posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Staton contributed 13 points and 10 boards. Karina Gordon and Maca Retamales added 11 and 10 points respectively, as the Eagles showcased their depth with 61 bench points and shot 52.1 percent from the field in the victory.

For the season, FGCU has relied on efficient scoring and strong defensive play. The Eagles average 63.6 points per game while holding opponents to 58.7. FGCU shoots 43.3 percent from the field and 30.5 percent from three-point range while averaging 35.9 rebounds and 12.4 assists per contest. Douglas leads the team with 11.4 points per game while also averaging 3.5 assists, ranking among the top assist leaders in the ASUN. Staton adds 10.9 points and a team-high 5.7 rebounds per game, while Rolle contributes across the stat sheet with 6.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, and nearly two assists per contest. The Eagles have also benefited from their depth, with players like Alexander and Mortag providing consistent production throughout the season.

Defensively, FGCU has been one of the stronger units in conference play. In 18 ASUN games during the regular season, the Eagles held opponents to the second-fewest points per game (56.4), the third-lowest field goal percentage (36.7%), and the lowest three-point percentage (25.1%) in the league. The Eagles also allowed the second-fewest rebounds in conference play at 32.9 per game, reflecting a defensive identity built around protecting the paint, contesting perimeter shots, and forcing difficult possessions.

Stetson enters Thursday's contest after finishing the regular season with a 19-10 overall record and a 12-6 mark in the ASUN, earning the No. 4 seed and a first-round bye in the tournament. The Hatters average 70.2 points per game while allowing 64.5, shooting 43.8 percent from the field and 36.8 percent from three-point range. Cameron Thomas leads the team with 16.3 points per game and also averages 4.6 rebounds. Mary McMillan adds 14.2 points and a team-high 4.2 assists per game, while Promise Keshi contributes 8.0 points and a team-best 6.1 rebounds per contest. Stetson's scoring efficiency and perimeter shooting have been key to its success throughout the season.

The remaining ASUN Tournament Quarterfinal matchups will also take place Thursday in Jacksonville. No. 8 seed Austin Peay faces No. 1 seed Eastern Kentucky, No. 7 seed West Georgia takes on No. 2 seed Jacksonville, and No. 6 seed North Alabama meets No. 3 seed Central Arkansas. The winner of Thursday's FGCU-Stetson matchup will advance to the ASUN Tournament Semifinals on Saturday, March 7 at 11:00 a.m., where they will face the winner of the Austin Peay and Eastern Kentucky contest.

For FGCU, the focus remains on continuing to improve each game throughout the tournament. Keys for the Eagles will be transition defense, protecting the paint, and taking care of the basketball offensively as they aim to extend their postseason run and move one step closer to another ASUN Tournament championship.
