FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast softball (10-19, 4-1 ASUN) split Saturday's doubleheader with Stetson (19-12, 4-1), falling 13-4 in the nightcap.
The Hatters scored in every inning besides the first behind a balanced offensive attack, tallying 13 hits behind five multi-hit games, including a 3-for-4 game from Annabella McClerran, who also scored four runs and had two RBI. Logan Ferman added a 2-for-3 evening with 3 RBI for the Hatters.
Stetson got on the board first in the top of the second, as Nadia English scored on a wild pitch. FGCU leveled the game at 1-1 in the bottom half of the frame. After reaching on an error,
Olivia Black left first base on the pitch and
Parris Wiggs grounded out to second base. Black took third on the groundout, and the throw from the first baseman to third sailed into left field foul territory, allowing Black to scamper home.
FGCU's bats were quieted in the middle innings as Stetson's churned out hits. The Hatters scored two runs in the third, four in the fourth, one in the fifth and five in the sixth, including a three-run by Forman in the fourth.
The Eagles got traffic on the basepaths in the sixth, scratching three runs across.
K'Mari Williams and
Presley Smith each had pinch hit singles, and Wiggs and
Nikki Gibson added two more to string together four consecutive singles and push three runs across, but FGCU fell 13-4.
FGCU and Stetson will play the series rubber match at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 22.
