FORT MYERS, Fla. – Following a complete game shutout performance where he struck out 11 batters and did not allow a walk, FGCU's
Evan Dempsey has been named the Atlantic Sun Conference's Pitcher of the Week.
This marks the third time this season Dempsey has been honored for his pitching acumen this season.
Dempsey tossed his national- and ASUN-leading second complete game of the year Friday as he recorded 11 strikeouts while facing 27 batters in seven innings against Queens. The junior hurler did not allow a run or a walk, yielding only six hits in the performance.
The complete game shutout marked the only shutout in the conference over the weekend, and he was one of only two ASUN pitchers to record 10 or more strikeouts, with the only other pitcher allowing five runs on three hits in his performance. Across the league throughout the entire weekend, there were only five ASUN team performances whose combined pitching staffs recorded more strikeouts than Dempsey did on his own in a seven-inning complete game.
FGCU returns to action Tuesday evening with a non-conference game at Florida Atlantic. First pitch in Boca Raton is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
